Men's Hoops Adds Hayes for Spring 2017, Gipson Starting 2017-18

CARSON -- Already sporting the best start for the Cal State Dominguez Hills men's basketball team since kicking off the 2008-09 season with seven-straight wins, head coach Steve Becker is set to welcome current CSUDH graduate student in Matt Hayes to the court in January as he helps continue the momentum from this year's current 5-2 start, and current high school senior Deshay Gipson, who will enter the 2017-18 season as a true freshman.

Entering his final semester of eligibility in January as a graduate student after competing at Division I Loyola Marymount, the 6-1 Hayes will bring a history of winning to the Toros.  He averaged 4.2 points per game for the Lions as a sophomore during the 2014-15 season, hitting 40.5 percent from behind the arc to lead the team and setting a career high with 20 points against Santa Clara after sinking 6-of-13 from downtown.  Prior to LMU, Hayes led Santa Rosa JC to the CCCAA State Championship, the first in the school's history.  He also earned first-team all-state and first-team all-league honors after scoring 16.2 points per game.  Before his year at SRJC, Hayes led Pleasant Grove HS to the CIF Division I State Championship in 2013, pouring in 19 points with four boards, two assists and a steal in the title game.  During the regional and state playoffs, he averaged 14.8 points, 3.5 rebounds, 2.0 assists and 1.5 steals, earning league and All-CIF accolades.

"We are very excited to add Matt to our program as a graduate transfer," begins Becker. "Matt brings a winning pedigree and the ability to shoot the basketball at an elite level. He was a key component on teams that won state championships at both the high school and junior college levels, and we expect Matt to be an impact player right away as he works toward completing his MPA."

Gipson, ranked as the 33rd top player in the state of California by ESPN,  will bring at least three Highland High School league titles with him to Carson, as well as first-team All-CIF, MVP and two first-team all-league honors after averaging 22.6 points, 8.3 rebounds, 3.6 assists and 2.2 steals per game last season as a dynamic 6-2 shooting guard.

"We couldn't be more thrilled that Deshay has decided to become a Toro," beams Becker.  "We have been recruiting Deshay for some time now, and (assistant coach) Ryan Frazer has done a tremendous job taking the lead. Deshay's toughness and ability to score the ball will allow him to transition to the college game seamlessly, but it's his defensive tenacity that stood out to us above everything else throughout the recruiting process. He is a special young man who we feel will thrive at CSUDH."

Riding a four-game winning streak, the Toros conclude non-conference play Saturday against California Miramir University, with first tip set for 7 pm in the Torodome.  Both live stats and a live stream will be available for this contest.
