Men's Basketball Closes 2016 with Win at Cal State San Marcos

SAN MARCOS – The Cal State Dominguez Hills men's basketball team will turn the calendar year over on a winning note.

Four starters combined for 55 points and Jonathan Nichols contributed to 14 off the bench as the Toros defeated host Cal State San Marcos 81-71 Thursday night.

The win erases a back-to-back losing skid for the Toros (6-4, 2-2 CCAA).

Vincent Golson led the effort for CSUDH with 18 points and four assists. It is the fifth consecutive game – sixth this season – that the senior has earned more than 15 points in a game. Khalil Bedart-Ghani had 15 points and eight rebounds, Justin Sadler followed with 12 and nine boards and Dharion Tanner rounded out the starters in double figures with 10 points.

CSUDH had a dominant night on the boards column, having out-rebound the Cougars 45-17. In fact, 20 of those 45 were coming off a Toro shot.

The Cougars (7-5, 2-3 CCAA) dropped their second consecutive game despite shooting 45.6 percent from the field and committing only nine turnovers. Josh Spiers also had 18 points on the night to lead CSUSM.

Tied at nine points apiece four minutes into the contest, Dharion Tanner hit a pair of free throws with 14:26 left in the half and the Toros had never fallen behind since. The Cougars had only tied the Toros once after, when Devin Koeplin made a layup at 10:55 to even the score at 16.

The difference in the game came towards the end of the first half, when the Toros went on a 12-3 run in the span of 3:46 gave the Toros a 39-29 lead.

The Toros finished the first half leading 42-39.

CSUSM did go on a 15-5 run late in the second half to turn a 10-point deficit into three with 4:31 remaining. The Toros took the benefit of the free throw line by making 10-of-11 to build an 80-66 lead heading into the final minute. Nichols had four of six made free throws made during that run.

The Toros will begin 2017 at the Torodome hosting Cal Poly Pomona Thursday at 7:30 p.m.
