TURLOCK — The Cal State Dominguez Hills men's basketball team struggled to find any buckets at Stanislaus State's Fitzpatrick Arena, and the CCAA rival Warriors took advantage of it by winning the non-conference matchup 64-45 Saturday evening.
It is the first of three scheduled contests between the two Cal State schools with the next two meetings counting towards the CCAA standings. The Warriors (1-2) will open the Toros 2016-17 home schedule December 2 and the third game is slated in Turlock on January 13.
The Toros (1-2) had a rough day around the perimeter, shooting 28.6 percent (16-for-56) from the field. The Cardinal and Gold was averaging 40 percent in the first two games.
Glenn Baral scored 10 points to be the only Toro in double figures. Dharion Tanner had eight points, Vincent Golson and Justin Sadler both had seven.
The Toros combined for 35 rebounds on the afternoon. Khaliq Ghani led the effort by grabbing seven coming off the bench.
Stanislaus State earned its first win behind Kaelen Mitchell's 14 points. Vondel Faniel and Kyle Gouveia both had 13 and nine rebounds.
The Toros only lead in the game was under the 18-minute mark, when Tanner hit a 3 to take a 5-3 lead.
CSUDH evened the score on two different occasions but a 15-2 Warrior run in the span of 6:53 gave Stanislaus State a 23-10 lead halfway through the first half.
The Toros will partake in Vanguard's Thanksgiving Classic in Costa Mesa. CSUDH starts with Shepherd University Thanksgiving Day at 2 p.m. followed by the NAIA's San Diego Christian Friday at 2 p.m.
