Starters Steer Toros to Win Against San Diego Christian to Conclude Thanksgiving Classic

COSTA MESA – Justin Sadler scored 18 points, Dharion Tanner added 15 and Khaliq Ghani contributed to 14 off the bench to lead the Cal State Dominguez Hills men's basketball team to a 78-59 win over NAIA member San Diego Christian to wrap up Vanguard University's Thanksgiving Classic Saturday.

The Toros (3-2) continued to be dominant on the boards for the second consecutive day, having out-rebounded the Hawks (3-3) 41-24. Khalil Bedart-Ghani led the effort for the Cardinal and Gold with a season-high 13 rebounds. He was three points shy from completing a double-double.

CSUDH had also shown to have shot well from the field, coming up short from the half-century mark at 49.2 percent. Tanner was 7-for-8 in field goal range while Ghani was a perfect 5-for-5.

The Hawks, who shot 36.4 percent, had led briefly early in the first half. With both teams tied at six three minutes into the contest, Deondre Otis broke it with a layup and Tanner went on to score the next seven points to give the Toros a 15-11 lead with 14:47 remaining.

The Toros had a 43-34 lead at intermission but started running away on a 10-point run to start the second half.

An old fashioned 3-point play from Sadler at the 6:53 mark gave the Toros their largest lead (24) in the game.

The Hawks starters did most of the work as they scored 55 points. Derek Novsek scored 14 to lead the team.

In addition to opening both the home and CCAA schedule Friday, CSUDH will do so looking for revenge against Stanislaus State from their non-conference meeting two weeks ago in Turlock, when the Warriors pummeled the Toros, 64-45.

Tipoff is to follow the women's matchup at approximately 7:30 p.m.
