Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Toros Get First Win Behind Gillett's 21 Points

LAIE, Hawaii - - Kayla Gillett scored 21 points, Simone Thompson has 18 including a 4-for-4 performance from 3-point range and Imari Brown finished with 15 points and 13 rebounds for a double-double as the Cal State Dominguez Hills women's basketball team got their first win of the season off the Mainland at BYU-Hawaii, 70-53, Wednesday night.

It was also interim head coach John Bonner's first collegiate win.

Having led by nine after three quarters, the Toros (1-2) went on to outscore the Seasiders (0-1) 22-14. Both Brown and Thompson each have a half a dozen points in that run.

The Toros finished the night shooting 40 percent (25-for-62) from the field. Nine of those field goals were from beyond the arc. In addition, CSUDH went 9-for-19 from the free throw line.

Despite having shot 24 percent at halftime, the Seasiders boosted that number up to 31 at the end of the game. Kristin Baldwin led the effort for them with 16 points and 15 boards. She also had five steals.

After a back-and-forth battle for possession to start the opening quarter, the Toros caught a 13-2 run near the end of the opening quarter to give them an 18-12 lead.

The Seasiders got within two at the 2:16 mark, when Mata Tonga made a layup to cut the Toros lead to 27-25.

Delaura Castanada gained some of the points back by hitting a 3-pointer and a jumper to take a 32-26 lead at halftime.

The Toros shot 43 percent from the field and hit three shots from beyond the arc on six attempts.

It was hard luck on the Seasiders side in the first half as they only shot 24 percent.

Following a day off Thursday, the Toros return to the Seasiders' campus to play a neutral site contest against Hawai`i at Hilo Friday. Tipoff is at 5 p.m. PST.
