John Bonner

John Bonner will enter his ninth season leading the Cal State Dominguez Hills women's basketball program. After being named interim head coach for the 2016-17 season, Bonner was named the permanent head coach in March of 2017. He has led the Toros to three California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Tournament berths, CCAA Regular Season Championship, NCAA West Region Championship, and made an appearance at the NCAA Div. II Elite Eight. 

For the 2022-2023 season head coach John Bonner was named the CCAA Coach of the Year, after leading the program to its first regular-season title since 2015-16. It is also the sixth time in program history a Toro has won the award, and first since 1996-97.

Bonner has coached a total of 13 All-CCAA honorees in his six seasons. In 2016-17, Imari Brown (second team) and Simone Thompson (honorable mention) were named All-CCAA. In 2017-18, Bonner guided Nautica Morrow and Taylor Farris to the first and second teams, respectively. Morrow repeated as a first-teamer the following year, with Ahlisha Henderson and Lea Anderson joining her on the second team and honorable mention, respectively. In 2019-20, Henderson was an honorable mention selection alongside Destinee Williams, while Ariana Harper took home second team and Newcomer of the Year honors. In 2023-2024 Dawnyel Lair was named the CCAA Player of the year and Nala Williams picked up Freshman of the year. Asia Jordan was also selected (first team), as well as Joe'l Benoit (honroable mention) , and Danyell Booker (honorable mention) All-CCAA. During the 2023-24 season coach Bonner guided his sophomore guard Nala Williams to All-CCAA First team, she also collected CCAA player of the week three times and was selected National Player of the Week by D2CIDA. In addition to her CCAA recognition Williams was also selected to the 2023-24 D2 CCA NCAA Division II Women's Basketball All-West Region Second Team.

Prior to coming to Carson, Bonner was part of the women's basketball staff at Fresno Pacific for six seasons from 2010-16. During his tenure with the Sunbirds he was promoted to be the program's first full-time assistant in 2014, before taking over the program as the interim head coach in April 2016.As the lead assistant coach, Bonner played an integral role in coaching, recruiting, scouting and all other facets of the women's basketball program. During his time at FPU, he helped the Sunbirds to a 12-8 conference record in 2013-14 season, the program's first winning record since 2002. He's also coached two All-Americans during his tenure.

Prior to joining the FPU staff, Bonner served as a student assistant for the Fresno State women's basketball team. During that tenure, he assisted with skill development and other aspects of the program, while being a part of multiple NCAA Tournament teams.

Bonner holds a bachelor's degree in psychology and a master's degree in counseling - marriage & family therapy, both from Fresno State.
