Bench Comes to the Rescue in Toros Win Over Hawai`i Hilo

LAIE, Hawai`i — Jocelyn Diaz scored 16 points and grabbed 13 rebounds for her first double-double as the Cal State Dominguez Hills women's basketball team's bench chipped in 36 points to give the Toros a 72-62 win over Hawai`i Hilo team on the campus of BYU-Hawai`i Friday.

Simone Thompson was also a major contributor by dropping 14 points and earning five boards. Lisa Rhett was credited for both five assists and steals each. Thompson, Rhett and Diaz had played more than 30 minutes in the game.

Despite being in foul trouble early in the game, Imari Brown finished the day with 16 points and seven rebounds. Yasmine Tweedy also came up short from a double-double, tallying nine points and seven rebounds.

The Toros (2-2) shot just two points below the season average, a 34.3 percentile. They did go 23-for-30 on the free throw line.

Asia Smith made her presence known in the paint for the Vulcans, which opened their season today. Smith scored 11 points and going to the glass 17 times while Sydney Mercer led the Vulcans with 19 points and had two of the only 3-pointers made.

The Vulcans shot 35 percent from the field.

Although the Toros built an 8-point lead near the end of the first quarter, it was lost in the second period when Mercer hit a jumper to tie the game at 16 apiece with 7:53 remaining.

Hawai`i Hilo led by as many as three shortly after Mercer's jumper but the lead did not last very long as Brown, Thompson, Diaz and Delaura Castanada combined for 17 points to take a 35-30 lead into halftime.

While the Vulcans grabbed the lead once more in the third quarter, the Toros retook the lead and never looked back.

Free throws became a factor in the runaway in the fourth quarter as the Toros hit nine within the final five minutes.

The Toros' Hawai`i and season-opening road trip concludes Saturday at BYU-Hawai`i when they  face Hawai`i Pacific at 7 p.m. PST.
