Otters Roar Back as Toros Drop Third Straight

CARSON -- After holding visiting Cal State Monterey Bay to under 40% shooting from the floor en route to taking an eight-point lead at the half, the Cal State Dominguez Hills Toros defense allowed 55 points in the second half to drop an 89-82 game it had led for most of the night.

Justin Sadler led the Toros with 21 points, but Otter Ryan Nitz trumped the junior with 28 points of his own as CSUDH drops to 7-7 overall, and 1-5 in CCAA play.

Shaquille Hunter added 18, Vincent Golson 15 and Jonathan Nichols 14 points to give the Toros four double-figure scorers in front of a spirited Thursday night crowd, with Sadler tying for game-high rebounds with nine.

The Toros sizzled from the start, nailing 51.5% of their shots led by 10 points apiece by Sadler and Hunter, while Monterey Bay's Evan Zeller matched CSUDH's duo with 10 to keep the Otters in the game early as the hosts entered the break up, 42-34.

A Sadler bucket to open the second half pushed CSUDH to its first double-figure lead, an advantage the hosts maintained nearly seven mintues into the second half, reaching a game-high 13 thrice.

Nitz, however, led the visitors on a 13-3 run that gave CSUMB its first lead of the game at 69-68, with a tipin by Mateo Jones at 5:24 resulting in the advantage.

A Nitz triple pushed CSUMB to 72-68, until a layup by Nichols gave the Toros life, bringing them to within 80-77 with 2:11 left in regulation.

Marquise Washington, however, scored four-straight points and blocked a Golson attempt before Mateo Jones put the game away with a layup to give CSUMB an 86-77 lead with 48 seconds left, putting the game away.

The Toros posted 10 less rebounds to the taller Otters as CSUMB's 11 offensive boards resulted in 20 second-chance points, with the taller visitors posting six blocks to none by the home squad.

CSUDH takes to the road on Saturday, traveling to Sonoma State for a 7:30 pm tip.
