Gators Outlast Toros Despite Golson's Career-High 29 Points

CARSON -- Junior point guard Vincent Golson continued his impressive debut campaign for Cal State Dominguez Hills after pouring in a career-high 29 points that included six makes from 3-point land, but visiting San Francisco State connected for 45.8% from the field and an even-better 46.2% from 3-point land en route to a 79-71 win on a warm Friday night in the Torodome.

CSUDH drops its third straight game, falling to 9-11, 3-9 CCAA.

The Gators scored 11 of the game's first 12 points in the first 3:33 minutes of play, until an Ivan Dooley layup broke CSUDH's cold spell. A pair of Darius Butler freebies brought the Toros to within eight points one possession later, but the guests opened up an 18-point lead midway through the first half.

Golson, however, brought the Toros back with a triple, getting fouled on the play and converting the free throw for the rare 4-point play to cut into SFSU's lead.

Down 30-16 with 4:35 left in the half, another Golson 3-pointer followed by a Brandon Woods bucket and triple by Butler brought the Toros to within 32-23 before heading into intermission down just 33-28.

Justin Sadler opened the second half with a pair of buckets to bring the hosts to within 33-32, before a Sadler free throw tied the game at 34-all with 16:51 left in regulation.  Dooley gave CSUDH its first lead of the game after getting fouled and sinking both free throws, only to have SFSU tie the contest on its next possession.

That score inspired the guests as the Gators went on a 13-2 run to open up the game at 47-36 four minutes later, with the lead hovering around the double-figure mark despite the long-range acumen of Golson, who hit 3 of his triples after the break en route to 16 second-half points.

Golson eclipsed his previous high of 26 points by hitting 8-of-19 shots from the field, also dishing a pair of assists and pulling down four boards.

Sadler finished with 15 points and 11 boards, while Butler came within one rebound of a double-double, also contributing 13 points.

CSUDH will look to snap its 3-game skid tomorrow night as it hosts Sonoma State, after the Seawolves cruised by Cal State LA earlier tonight.
