Dooley Sets Toros Record for 3-Pointers in a Single Game as CSUDH Dominates Sonoma State

CARSON -- Senior sharpshooter Ivan Dooley earned his nickname tonight after tying his career high with 31 points in an 88-65 blowout win over visiting Sonoma State, with nine 3-pointers besting the Cal State Dominguez Hills single-game record first set by John Nojima in 1987, and tied by Pierson Williams in both 2013 and 2014.

The win, which snapped a 3-game slide, evened the regular season series with the Seawolves and moves the Toros to 10-11 overall, and 4-9 in CCAA play, while the 20 3-pointers made as a team smashed the previous mark of 19 successful earlier, set against Alaska Anchorage.

Here's Dooley on his record-breaking performance.

The hosts scored the game's first 5 points after Darius Butler drained a triple and Jonathan Nichols followed with a steal and fast-break layup two minutes into the game, before doubling Sonoma State's seven points at the 14:23 mark after a Dooley 3-pointer.

Consecutive triples by Dooley and Vincent Golson three minutes later pushed the Toro lead to 25-7, only to have the Seawolves use a 21-11 run to close the period, and get within 36-28 at the break.

After an inauspicious first half in which he scored just nine points, Dooley took over after the break with 22 points, with all his field goals coming from behind the arc.

With two Justin Sadler layups pushing CSUDH's lead to 40-28 just 39 seconds into the period, a barrage of 3-pointers set the tone for the offensive half, with eight triples accounting for the next 11 buckets between the two teams.

Up 60-40 after a Nichols flush, a Nichols tip in that started an old-fashioned 3-point play gave the Toros a 23-point edge, with the lead reaching 25 thrice, the last coming on a Golson layup in the paint with 7:56 left in regulation.

With the game well in hand, all nine players in uniform saw action and earned their way into the point column, including true freshman Wilton Guillory, whose successful free throw with 1:07 left in the game was his first point as a Toro.

The Toros shot a blistering 52.6% from the floor and 57.1% from downtown.  Golson added 20 points and Nichols 16 as CSUDH's defense held SSU to under 40% shooting on the night.

CSUDH gets right back into CCAA play on Tuesday at crosstown rival Cal State L.A., with first tip set for 7:30 pm in the Eagles Nest.  CSUDH is sponsoring a free bus ride, ticket and meal as part of Toro Days, with signups taking place in Housing and ASI.
