Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Coyotes Survive in 72-71 Win Over Game Toro Squad

SAN BERNARDINO -- Down one with six seconds left in a hostile and boistrous Cal State San Bernardino environment, junior Vincent Golson's potential 3-point game-winning attempt at the buzzer hit the front iron and bounced away, giving the host Coyotes a thriling 72-71 win to even the regular season series at one game apiece.

Golson finished with 17 points and a game-high nine assists in the loss.

The Toros were in control of the game early after taking an 11-3 lead on a Justin Sadler layup with five minutes elapsed in the period, with a Golson triple giving CSUDH its first double-figure lead at 21-10 five minutes later.

The Coyotes, however, used a 15-6 spurt over the next five minutes of play to crawl to within 27-25, the same 2-point margin that separated the two squads at the end of the period as the Toros entered halftime leading 33-31.

Darius Butler led the Cardinal and Gold with 11 points as the Toros shot a sizzling 60 percent from the floor, with three buckets coming from downtown.

The second half saw the Yotes turn the tables on the visitors, taking their first lead of the game on an old fashioned 3-point play by Keith Smith.  The two teams exchanged leads until the hosts took control midway through the period, taking a 49-41 lead on a Desi Barmore layup with 10:28 left in regulation.

A fastbreak layup by Golson at the 6:00 mark cut CSUDH's deficit to just four at 57-53, but CSUSB increased its edge to seven points on its next possession, where it hovered over the next four minutes.

Down 69-62, a pair of Golson free throws and a Shaquille Hunter layup after a Coyote turnover gave the Toros life by bringing them to 69-66 at the 1:51 mark, with an Ivan Dooley old-fashioned 3-point play knotting the game at 69 all a minute later.

After a Coyote miss, a Golson jumper gave the Toro a two-point lead with 11 ticks left in regulation, a lead that was short-lived after Juan Martinez drained a triple to give the Coyotes what proved to be the winning margin, Martinez's only points of the night.

Butler and Hunter each finished with 14 points, while Dooley added 12 and 5 boards.  Sadler nearly missed out on a double-double, pulling down 11 boards to go with nine points.

CSUDH will look for snap its two-game skid next weekend as San Francisco State visits Carson on Friday, January 29, with tipoff set for 7:30 pm on the Dave Yanai Court in the Torodome.
