No. 17 UC San Diego Rolls to Spirited Win Over Toros

LA JOLLA -- Host and 17th-ranked UC San Diego shot 52.8 percent from the floor en route to a convincing 74-51 win over visiting Cal State Dominguez Hills on its Spirit Night, snapping the Toros' modest two-game win streak.

Darius Butler led the Toros with a team-high 16 points in the loss as the Toros dip to 9-9 overall, and 3-7 CCAA.

In front of an announced crowd of nearly 4,000 fans in RIMAC Arena, the Tritons roared to a 37-29 lead at the half behind nearly 57.7 percent shooting in the first 20 minutes of play, while Butler kept the Toros in the period with a team-best 10 points on 4-of-7 shooting from the floor.

CSUDH kept it close early in the half as Justin Sadler completed an old-fashioned 3-point play to knot the game at 11-11 at the 14:03 mark, before the Tritons went on a 12-2 run over the next four minutes to sieze control of the half.

The UCSD lead reached as much as 14 before CSUDH made it a single-digit deficit behind a Buler jumper with just under three minutes left, with a Jonathan Nichols triple bringing the Toros to within 32-27, and a pair of free throws by reigning CCAA Player of the Week Vincent Golson cutting UCSD's lead to just three on the next possession before the Tritons entered the break up eight.

Any hopes of a Toro comeback in the second half were dashed early as UCSD built a 15-point lead on a Drew Dyer triple four minutes in as part of his game-high 24 points.

The UCSD lead reached 18 points twice over the next six minutes before a Golson bucket in the paint gave CSUDH hope trailing 58-45 with 7:27 left in regulation.

The Tritons, however, had other ideas as an 8-0 run over the next three minutes brought UCSD's lead to 21 at 66-45, all but putting the game away in the eventual 74-51 decision.

Sadler added 14 and Golson 12 in the loss as the Toros got hammered on the boards, 43 to 24.  CSUDH kept its turnovers low, but a 14 to 5 edge in 2nd chance points and an 18 to 6 advantage in bench points for the blue and gold were too much for the Toros to overcome.

CSUDH will look to take a weekend split tomorrow night at CS San Bernardino after the Coyotes squeaked by Cal State LA, 58-56, earlier tonight.
