No. 21 Chico State Wears Down Toros in 78-64 Decision

CARSON -- Despite a team-best 17 points from senior Ivan Dooley and trailing by just four at the half, the Cal State Dominguez Hills men's basketball team succumbed to No. 21 Chico State en route to a 78-64 Wildcat victory, dropping the Toros to 7-6, 1-4 CCAA.

The loss is CSUDH's second-straight, and keeps Chico State atop the CCAA standings as one of four teams sitting at 5-1 in league play.

The Toros hung tough with the 21st-ranked team in the nation, thanks in large part to Dooley who contributed nine points in 17 minutes of play as the two teams combined to score just six points over the first 4:24 of the contest.

CSUDH, in fact, enjoyed as large as a 5-point edge at 12-7 after a Darius Butler layup at the 12:33 mark, only to have the Wildcats regroup by outscoring the hosts 24-15 the rest of the period, and taking a two-rebound edge to enter intermission up 31-27.

After the Toros got to within one on a Justin Sadler layup early in the second half, the Wildcats pushed their lead to nine at the 15:54 mark, and to double figures at 47-37 on a Tanner Giddings jumper a minute and a half later.

Spurred by a Josh Brown triple and five-straight points by Dooley, CSUDH crept to within 50-47 with under 10 minutes left in regulation, only to see Chico State reply with a 16-6 run to take a 66-53 lead with 3:45 left, all but puting the game away.

The lead reached as much as 17 late before the eventual 78-64 final.

Sadler finished with 14 points with Shaquille Hunter chipping in 10, but Chico State's size came to the forefront to the tune of a 38-18 points in the paint advantage, while its bench enjoyed a 23-13 edge in points.

Chico State took full advantage of its size after the break, finishing with a 9-board advantage that included 10 on the offensive end that resulted in 10 second-chance points with eight coming after the break.

CSUDH continues its CCAA homestand on Thursday, hosting CS Monterey Bay for a 7:30 pm first tip.
