Toros Shock No. 5 Broncos to Complete Huge Weekend Sweep

CARSON -- One night after surviving an emotional overtime win over California Collegiate Athletic Association elite Humboldt State, the Cal State Dominguez Hills Toros completed an inspiring weekend by toppling national giant and No. 5 Cal Poly Pomona in a 76-73 decision behind a trio of Toros who went for at least 20 points each.

Vincent Golson led all scorers with 23 points as CSUDH improves to 9-8 overall, and 3-6 in the CCAA.

This win snaps a 7-game drought against the Broncos after the Toros last earned a win on January 20, 2012, and marks the highest-ranked team CSUDH has bested since the Cardinal and Gold downed No. 3 Humboldt State in the CCAA Tournament Championship game, the same year the Toros toppled No. 1 ranked Cal Poly Pomona.

"I'm so proud of the way our guys competed tonight against one of the best teams int he country, making plays down the stretch," begins CSUDH interim head coach Steve Becker.

"Vincent had an unbelievable weekend, making huge plays all weekend as pivotal to our success.  This is a team win, and now we have to carry this momentum with us and be ready to compete at UC San Diego next week."

Both teams had their offenses in high gear as the Toros ended the game connecting on 57.5% of their shots compared to a 53.2% success rate for the Green and Gold.

Unlike one night before that saw the Toros down by as much as 20 points early, the Toros continued their momentum from the win over Humboldt State early, taking an 18-14 lead on consecutive 3s by Golson and Darius Butler, who finished with 20 points on the night.  CPP, however, outscored the Toros 20-14 the rest of the half to enter the break up 34-32.

Here's Butler after the huge win.

The game stayed close after intermission as ties were forged at 41, 64 and 66, the latter coming at the 5:03 mark on a Jordan Faison bucket with the Broncos down two.

An Ivan Dooley old-fashioned 3-point play, however, gave the Toros a slim 3-point lead, with clutch free throw shooting by Golson and Dooley sealing the win as the duo hit 7-of-8 in the final minutes.

Butler gave the Toros a huge boost at the 10:34 mark of the half, drilling a 3-pointer and getting fouled, before sinking the ensuing free throw for the rare 4-point play that gave CSUDH a 58-53 lead.

Dooley finished with 20 points in the win as CSUDH avenged an earlier season defeat at the hands of the Broncos in Pomona, and completed arguably the toughest home weekend of the year.

The Toros take to the road next week to take on No. 14 UC San Diego, which took a 7-point win in Carson in mid-December.
