Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Golson's Career High Spurs Toros to Wild 91-83 Overtime Win Over Jacks

CARSON -- Down by 20 points against visiting Humboldt State 15 minutes into the first half, Vincent Golson scored 24 of his career-high 26 points in the game's final 25 mintues of regulation and five minutes of overtime to give the Cal State Dominguez Hills Toros a gut-checking 91-83 win over the Jacks, who entered tonight with just two losses in league play and in the top half of the league.

The Toros snap a four-game skid, and have now won two-straight over the perennial power Jacks in leveling their overall record at 8-8, and moving to 2-6 in CCAA play.

"I'm so proud of the resiliency that we showed tonight," begins interim head coach Steve Becker, obviously excited.

"We couldn't seem to buy a basket in the first 10 minutes of the first half, and we didn't quit.  Vincent played at an extremely high level tonight, and our team's ability to make free throws down the stretch was critical in tonight's win."

Here's Shaquille Hunter after the game after pulling down a career-high in rebounds.

The visitors dominated the first 15 minutes of play, rolling to a 31-11 lead at the 6:54 mark and looking to turn tonight's contest into a laugher.

Darius Butler, however, had other ideas as three free throws followed by two by Golson cut five points off the Jack lead, with two Golson layups, two free throws by Ivan Dooley, a Justin Sadler bucket and Golson basket with 25 seconds left the frame capping a 15-0 run that saw the visitors go without a bucket over the final 6:54 and see their once 20-point lead dwindle to just 31-26.

Dooley set the tone in the second half with a triple on CSUDH's first possession to bring CSUDH to within two until a Malik Morgan basket broke a drought that lasted nearly eight minutes.

The Toros, however, kept their foot on the pedal as a Butler jumper and triple by Dooley at the 17:54 mark gave CSUDH its first lead since Shaquille Hunter's triple opened the game's scoring.

Tied at 41-all two minutes later, Dooley gave CSUDH a 51-45 lead with just under 12 minutes left in regulation, only to have the Jacks go on a 7-1 run to knot the game at 52.

A Darius Butler triple, one of 12 made on the night for the hosts, pushed CSUDH's lead to 65-58 with 4:02 left, with the Toros holding a 7-point lead two minutes later.

CSUDH, however, misfired on two possessions while the Jacks converted on three of theirs to tie the game at 66-66 all, sending the game into overtime.

In the extra period, the Toros made their only attempt from the field, but more than made up for it at the charity stripe as Golson hit 9-of-10, while the team itself nailed 22-of-24 to put the Jack rally to rest en route to 25 points, setting the record for most points scored in overtime that surpassed the old record of 16 against Sonoma State on January 15, 2000.

Golson finished with 11-of-12 makes from the line for his 26, while Hunter (16), Dooley (16), Butler (15) and Sadler (13) all posted double-figure scoring in the balanced win.

CSUDH shot just 41.8% from the floor, but dominated at the line hitting 33-of-42 on the night, compared to just 10-of-21 for the visitors.  The Toros also dominated on the glass, pulling down 42 compared to just 29 for HSU, led by Hunter's career-high 12.

The Toros will look to make it two-straight tomorrow night in game two of the toughest three-game stretch of the year, taking on No. 5 Cal Poly Pomona after the Broncos were stunned at Cal State L.A. earlier tonight in a 47-45 loss as CPP blew a 10-point lead at the half by scoring just 12 points after the break.

The game will be streamed live on www.CollegeTVTicket.com, with first tip set for 7:30 pm in the Torodome.
