Nerves Get Best of Toros in 6-1 Loss to No. 18 Pomona in CCAA Tournament Opener

STOCKTON -- Making its first postseason appearance of any kind since the 2010 season, Cal State Dominguez Hills was its own worst enemy as top-seeded and No. 18 Cal Poly Pomona took advantage of a pair of Toro errors in the bottom of the first inning, leading to five runs en route to an eventual 6-1 win to open the CCAA Championship Tournament, taking place at Klein Family Field.

Senior Joshua Flores knocked half of the Toros' six hits on the day as CSUDH moves to the tournament's first elimination game, set for 3:00 pm tomorrow afternoon against Cal State Monterey Bay, which fell in a 5-2 decision in the late game.

Nothing went right in the bottom of the first, as Toro starter TyRay Gatewood's first foray into a league postseason contest started with four straight balls before the next batter reached on a Toro error.

A would-be sacrifice bunt that turned into a bunt single loaded the bases, with a fielder's choice, another Toro error and two singles put the Toros down 5-0 before their second trip to the plate.

Gatewood then settled in, retiring the next nine batters he faced.

Unfortunately, the Toros only mustered a Flores single through three innings, before getting on the scoreboard in the fourth.

In that frame, CCAA MVP Kamran Young singled to begin the inning, with a Juan Avena baseknock one batter later moving Young to second, with Danny Matienzo drawing a walk after a 10-pitch at-bat to load the bases.

CSUDH then benefited on a wild pitch to plate Young, giving the Toros hope.

CPP earned that run back in the fifth after four singles to bring the score to 6-1, giving CSUDH just 12 more outs with which to work.

The Toros mounted rallied in their final two at-bats, leaving four batters over the final two frames as part of eight total in the game.

Gatewood went 7.0 innings i his first CCAA playoff game, allowing four earned runs and seven hits.

CPP's Ryan Olson improved to 10-0 in the win, throwing 5.0 innings and allowing three hits while fanning four.

CSUDH dropped three of four to the Otters in Seaside earlier this year, with tomorrow's probable starter in Kevin Brown earning the lone win in a complete-game effort, fanning eight while allowing four hits and two earned runs in late April.
