Toros Live to Play Another Day After 6-4 Win Over CS Monterey Bay in CCAA Tournament

STOCKTON -- Needing a win to keep its 2015 season alive, senior Winston Lavendier pitched 5.2 innings of quality relief while sophomore Adrian Guzman provided the offensive heroics as Cal State Dominguez Hills came back to take a 6-4 win over Cal State Monterey Bay in the first elimination game of the CCAA Championship Tournament.

In the process, CSUDH eliminated the Otters while moving on to Round 3 of the tournament, where they will face No. 2 seed UC San Diego tomorrow at 3 pm after top-seeded Cal Poly Pomona came from behind with two runs in the eighth to take a 2-1 win over the Tritons.

The Toros improve to 29-23 on the year, their highest win total since the 2010 season that saw CSUDH go 41-20, and host the NCAA West Regional.

Things didn't start well for the Toros as starter Kevin Brown ran into trouble immediate, hitting the first batter he faced on the second pitch of the game before hitting another batter with the bases loaded to bring home the game's first run.

CSUMB continued its patience at the plate by loading the bases on three-consecutive walks to open the inning, before a sacrifice fly made the score 2-0 followed with a wild pitch for the third run of the game.

After Brown hit another batter to load the bases with two out, Lavendier came in and provided quick relief, fanning the lone batter he faced to prevent further damage.

CSUDH capitalized on that momentum in the top of the third as Guzman drew a one-out walk and moved to third on a Juan Avena baseknock one batter later.

The Otters looked to escape the threat by fanning CCAA MVP Kamran Young on a 1-2 offering, but the pitch bounced away from the Otter catcher for a wild pitch, allowing Guzman to score from third.

CCAA 1st-teamer Brady Conlan then brought the Toros to within one with a single to the opposite field, giving CSUDH momentum.

CSUMB nearly took that momentum away in the bottom of the fourth after loading the bases with none out, but a force out at home and a 6-4-3 double play kept the Otters still up just one.

The Toros took advantage in the sixth inning with one out as Conlan was plunked and Kevin Lenik was walked to put runners on first and second.

Danny Matienzo then banged a single up the middle to tie the game at 3-3, before Joshua Flores beat out an infield hit to load the bases.

Johnny Palmer gave the Toros their first lead with an RBI single to left to make it 4-3, before Guzman gave the Toros a 3-run cushion with a 2RBI single on an 0-2 pitch, prompting a pitching change by the Otters.

Lavendier was magnificent in a spot relief appearance, retiring the Otter side in order thrice on the day, allowing just two hits and zero earned runs in improving to 8-6 on the year.

CSUMB rallied in the eighth on a leadoff walk and Toro error, with a walk loading the bases and bringing in Lenik in a save situation.

After a sacrifice fly brought the Otters to within 6-4, Lenik fanned Justin Flores on three pitches to preserve the two-run lead.

The Otters had one final chance to make some noise in the ninth after a leadoff walk to Kevin Davidson, but after a pop fly to left field, Davidson looked to steal second, only to be cut down by Matienzo to take the proverbial wind out of the Otters' sail.

That failed attempt was compounded even more as Hayden Duer followed with a single through the left side, only to be left on base as Lenik induced a pop fly to center field for the final out of the game.

Guzman, Young and Brandon Polizzi each banged two hits in the win as part of 11 singles, while the Toro pitchers limited the offensive-minded Otters to just four hits.

The Tritons took the regular season series three games to one, outscoring the Toros 34-3 in the process that included three shutout wins.
