Kamran Young Named CCAA Player of the Year

Toros place six on All-CCAA Teams including Young and Conlan on 1st-team

WALNUT CREEK -- Cal State Dominguez Hills senior slugger Kamran Young was named the California Collegiate Athletic Association Player of the Year, it was announced by the CCAA Office in a vote of the league's head coaches.

Young's MVP award, the fourth-ever honor for the program following CCAA MVP nods for Darrell Conner in 1991, Jason Klug in 2006 and Jon Alia in 2009, leads a total seven awards earned by the Toros that include 1st-team nods by Young and junior Brady Conlan.

Seniors Kevin Brown and Fernando Gallegos both earned 2nd-team honors, while junior transfer TyRay Gatewood and freshman Brandon Polizzi were named Honorable Mention.

Young, who earned his honors as a utility player after playing half his games at first base and in the outfield, is enjoying a sensational season as the No. 4 seeded Toros prepare to take on top-seeded and No. 19 Cal Poly Pomona today at 3 pm in the first game of the CCAA Championship Tournament, with CSUDH relishing the role as underdog after being picked to finish last in the CCAA after a preseason coaches poll.

The Santa Clarita native, who earned a pair of All-Region honors as well as 1st-team All-CCAA accolades as a junior, currently ranks 20th in walks, 25th in home runs, 26th in on-base percentage, 34th in slugging percentage and 38th in home runs per game in the NCAA, taking it up a notch in league play by leading the league in batting average, home runs, OB% and SLG%, placing 2nd in RBI, 3rd in walks and triples, 4th in runs and 5th in hits after the regular season.

Young also leads the team with 12 multi-RBI contests, including a 5RBI effort to open the four-game set at CS San Bernardino last week that included two home runs, also tying for the team lead with 20 multi-hit contests and boasting a team-best 16-game hit streak which he will try to extend to 17 this afternoon against the Broncos.

Earning his first All-CCAA honor, 1st-teamer Conlan also has enjoyed a breakout year, currently ranking 13th in the NCAA in doubles.

The Chatsworth native also leads the CCAA in hits, sits 2ndin doubles, 4th in home runs, 5th in RBI and SLG% and 10th in runs while starting at third base.

He ties Young with 20 multi-hit efforts while adding 11 multi-RBI games, sporting a season-best 10-game hit streak on the year.

Senior righty Brown picked up his 2nd-year honor as a starting pitcher after missing all of last year and most of 2013, heading into tomorrow's match-up 4th in the CCAA in wins, 7th in strikeouts, 10th in strikeouts per game and 17th in ERA.

Brown's biggest game came at UC San Diego in a complete-game win to salvage one of the four games in the series, fanning nine Tritons and allowing just one earned run.

Gallegos also earned his first league honor with a 2nd-team All-CCAA nod as a designated hitter, fulfilling that role the most times on the team.

The Sylmar native currently is batting .338 with 48 hits and 7 doubles, enjoying 14 multi-hit and 4 multi-RBI games, with a career-high 5-for-5 effort against Sonoma State, just one hit shy of tying the CSUDH record for hits in a game.

Gallegos also contributed on the mound, earning five wins while fanning 45 batters in 18 appearances.

Two newcomers in Gatewood and Polizzi both earned Honorable Mention All-CCAA honors in their first years in Carson, with each in contention for Newcomer and Freshman of the Year honors, respectively.

Gatewood made an immediate impact as a reliever-turned-starter en route to his Honorable Mention nod, saving four games early before posting three wins as a starter.  Currently in the CCAA, Gatewood sits 6th in saves, 9th in strikeouts per game, 12th in ERA and 18th in strikeouts.

Polizzi, meanwhile, earned his Honorable Mention honor after finishing the regular season 2nd in runs, 6th in hits and 11th in walks, starting the season with a nine-game hit streak in which he batted .459 to start the season.
