WALNUT CREEK -- By virtue of the second tie-breaker, the Cal State Dominguez Hills Toros earned the top seed in the upcoming California Collegiate Athletic Association Tournament, and will begin defense of their title on Friday at 12 noon against the winner of No. 4 seed UC San Diego and No. 5 seed Cal State Bernardino, who will battle in a first round match-up on Thursday.
Humboldt State and Cal State Dominguez Hills share this year's regular-season title with identical 19-3 records, and first-round byes in next week's tournament. Despite the tie, however, the Toros earned the top seed after CSUDH and HSU split the regular season series, with the Toros claiming the head-to-head tie breaker with a 2-0 record against the Broncos, the next highest seed in the league.
Seniors Talia Rayford, Tayler Champion and Ashanti Sweezer shared their thoughts on the tournament, the season, and being part of making history in their final season in Cardinal and Gold, with no intention of slowing down.
Cal Poly Pomona claimed the No. 3 seed with its a record of 17-5, while UC San Diego (16-6), Cal State San Bernardino (14-8), and Cal State East Bay (13-9) will be the No. 4, No. 5, and No. 6 seeds, respectively.
All three rounds of this year's Conference tournament will be hosted at Stockton Arena in Stockton, Calif. The dates are set for March 5-7 with two games scheduel for both Thursday, March 5 and Friday, March 6. The Championship games will be played on Saturday, March 7. Thursday's and Friday's games are scheduled for 12:00 p.m. and 2:30 p.m., while Saturday's tipoff will take place at 5:00 p.m.
The 12-team Basketball Tournament relocates from its previous site — Citizen's Business Bank Arena in Ontario, Calif., where it was held for the past two seasons.
