Toros State Their Case Against Humboldt in 79-76 Win

CARSON -- It was a tale of two Cal State Dominguez Hills teams as the Toros rebounded from their worst defeat of this season to take a thrilling 79-76 win over visiting Humboldt State tonight, the same Lumberjack team that handed CSUDH a 28-point defeat to kick off the new calendar year in Arcata.

Justin Sadler tied for game-high scoring honors with 17 points, with Darnell Martin (pictured) providing a herculean 13-rebound, 11-point effort in the win, a fitting one as the Toros honored local heroes in a halftime ceremony.

"I thought we competed at a much higher level than we did last night, and I'm really happy for our guys to see some success tonight against a high-powered Humboldt team," begins CSUDH interim head coach Steve Becker.

"We did an excellent job on the glass tonight, and tonight we got contributions from everyone on the floor.

"DJ and Justin combined for 22 rebounds, and Justin continues to be extremely efficient and a real force for us as his 17 points and nine rebounds, five of which came on the offensive end, were vital in our win tonight."

Coming off a tough loss to CS San Bernardino last night, the Toros came out firing to begin the contest, taking an 11-3 lead behind a Tyler Payne triple and a pair of buckets by Emmett Duvall.

The lead grew to 10 on a pair of free throws by lightning quick Josh Brown at the 14:00 mark, only to have the Jacks answer and whittle their deficit to just four on an Allen Guie layup.

Up 13-9, CSUDH answered back, again reaching 10 at 22-12 on a thunderous jam by Jonathan Nichols, which literally caused the scoreboards to shut down.

Despite a brief delay, CSUDH continued its hot shooting as another jam, this time by Ivan Dooley, pushed the Toro lead to 11, a lead that reached as much as 18 at 37-19 after a 3-pointer by Shaquille Hunter, prompting a Jack time out.

The respite worked as the guests used a 13-2 run to close the period, getting to 39-32 heading into halftime.

The second half saw the roles reversed, with the Jacks roaring out to a 12-4 run en route to taking a 44-43 lead on an Austin Bryan 3-pointer with four minutes elapsed.

That's where the game hovered over the next eight minutes until a Brown jumper and layups by Martin and Duvall gave the hosts a 63-58 lead at the 8:02 mark.

Two free throws by Margin gave the Toros a 71-62 lead with just under four minutes left in regulation, but the Jacks clawed back, tying the game at 73-73 with just 1:37 left in the game.

That's when CSUDH's free throw shooting came into play as Duvall made the back end and former Jack Brandon Woods drained two to give the Toros the lead for good, one they held onto after an errant 3-point attempt by the Jacks hit nothing but rim to preserve the 3-point win.

Sadler tied for game-high honors with 17 points with Dooley, Duvall and Martin each adding 11 in the win.

Martin was the lone player to notch a double-double after pulling down 13 boards as CSUDH dominated the glass to the tune of a 43 to 26 advantage.

The Toros shot 48.0% from the field and a season-best 87.5% from the foul line (28-32).

In between halves, the CSUDH Athletics Department presented autographed basketballs to Captains Rory Brunner and Dennis Clark, Engineers Chris Patton and Stu Fujino, firefighters/paramedics Mark Chavez and Frank Gutierrez and firefighter Justin Guerrero from City of Carson Fire Station 116, as well as Officer Precious Airess from the CSUDH campus Police Department.
