Broncos Hand Toros 71-53 Defeat in CCAA Action

POMONA -- Junior Emmett Duvall led all scorers with 18 points on 5-of-6 shooting and 7-of-9 from the foul line, but host Cal Poly Pomona converted on 10 more field goals on the night en route to a 71-53 win over visiting Cal State Dominguez Hills on CPP's "Homecoming."

The Toros fall to 6-20, 2-18 CCAA, with two games left in the regular season.

"Our turnovers prevented us from making runs tonight against a very good Pomona team, but we continued to play extremely hard and never quit, which is someting very special with our team," begins CSUDH interim head coach Steve Becker.

"Emmett made some huge plays and was a real force on the offensive end, and Darnell Martin also made some timely play for us and rebounded the ball at a high level tonight.

"We appreciate the opportunity to continue to compete and hopefully close this year on a postivie note at home next week."

The Broncos stormed out of the gate en route to a commanding 39-26 lead at the half, holding the Toros to just seven makes from the field with a solid 9-of-12 effort from the foul line keeping CSUDH in the game.

CPP, however, upped its game after the half, pushing the lead to a game-high 20 midway through the second half.

Behind Duvall and Darnell Martin, the Toros whittled their deficit to 52-41 with 6:46 left in regulation, before CPP pushed it to back to 17 points five minutes later en route to the eventual 18-point difference.

Martin added 14 points and nine boards, with David Gonzalez adding eight points and Shaquille Hunter seven.

CSUDH concludes its regular season next weekend at home, starting with a Friday tilt against Sonoma State at 7:30 pm.
