Toros Cold as No. 5 Broncos Cruise to 86-53 Win

POMONA -- Perennial power and 5th-ranked Cal Poly Pomona held visiting Cal State Dominguez Hills to just 38.0% shooting from the field and 21.7% from long range en route to a convincing 86-53 win in the first California Collegiate Athletic Association contest for the Toros.

Senior sharp-shooter Ivan Dooley led all scorers with 19 points, adding six boards in the process.

CSUDH falls to 5-3, 0-1 CCAA with the loss, which snapped a four-game win streak and extended CPP's win streak over the Toros to seven games, and to five games at Kellogg Gym.

A triple by Shaquille Hunter opened the scoring, with a Darius Butler 3-pointer giving CSUDH an 8-6 lead with 15:34 left in the half.  That's when a combination of Pomona's defense and CSUDH's cold shooting seemed to put a barrier on the Toro rim as the hosts went on a 33-12 run the rest of the period to take a comfortable 39-20 lead into the break.

Things didn't get much better for the Cardinal and Gold in the second half as the Bronco lead reached 20 points at the 17:00 mark as part of a 9-0 run to put the game away for good.

Buckets by Butler and Brandon Woods got the Toros to within 19 on two occasions midway through the period, but CPP quickly upped its edge to 30 at 70-40 with 7:05 left before reaching a game-high 35-point cushion twice, the second with just 2:45 left in the game in the eventual 86-53 final.

Justin Sadler added nine with Sadler and Hunter pulling down six boards each.

CPP used a hefty 50-20 edge in points in the paint as it shot 50.7% from the floor, outrebounding the Toros 39-32 in the process.  A usually careful ball-handling team, 17 turnovers proved costly in the loss as the second-highest total of the year, while CSUDH's eight assists were its lowest total of the year.

The Toros host Bethesda University on Tuesday for their final non-conference game of the year, with tipoff set for 7 pm on the Dave Yanai Court in the Torodome.
