Strong Second Half the Impetus in 91-68 Win Over Bethesda

CARSON -- After a tightly-contested first half in which just three points separated host Cal State Dominguez Hills and visiting Bethesda, the Toros took it up a notch after the break and the result was a convincing 91-68 win over the Flames with Vincent Golson leading all scorers with 19 points.

CSUDH improves to 6-3 on the year as it concludes its non-conference schedule.

Here's Golson on tonight's win, citing the energy of Jonathan Nichols as the key.

The Toros lit up the net in the first 20 minutes of play en route to shooting 65.0% from the field, with nine points each by Golson and Justin Sadler lead the Cardinal and Gold charge.

Visiting Bethesda, however, after being down by as much as 15 after a Golson jumper at the 9:45 mark gave the Toros a comfortable 24-9 lead, stormed back with six stragiht points to cut its deficit to single digits, before tying the game at 36-36 on a Jorge Castro bucket with 1:55 left in the half.

A pair of Sadler free throws and a layup by Shaquille Hunter were offset by a pair of Bethesda scores, until a triple by Hunter as the first half buzzer sounded hit nothing but net, giving CSUDH much needed momentum entering the half.

After intermission, the Toros clamped down on defense while keeping their hot stroke, limiting the guests to just eight field goals in the period.

Darius Butler aided Golson on offense with his 11 second-half points as CSUDH went on an 18-0 run after Bethesda took a 50-48 lead at the 15:01 mark to take control of the game, the last three points of the spurt coming on a Golson trifecta.

The lead reached as high as 29 at 88-59 on a pair of Nichols freebies at the 2:46 mark en route to the 91-68 final.

Hunter finished with 16, Butler with 13, Sadler with 12 and Ivan Dooley with 11 to give CSUDH its balance, with 10 of the buckets coming via 3-point land.

CSUDH went to the line 34 times with 25 makes, led by Sadler's 6-of-8, Butler and Nichols with 5-of-6 each, and Golson with a perfect 5-of-5 from the charity stripe.

The Toros also used their quickness to swipe 11 balls, leading to 20 easy points.

The Cardinal and Gold takes a week off for finals, resuming play on Thursday against UC San Diego, with first tip set for 5:30 pm in the Torodome.
