Cougars Too Good in 95-84 Win Over Toros

CARSON -- Senior Ivan Dooley led Cal State Dominguez Hills with 18 points while Jonathan Nichols (pictured) chipped in a solid 6-of-8 shooting effort, but visiting Cal State San Marcos received a 30-point effort by Darnell Taylor en route to a 95-84 win in the final game of the 2015 calendar year.

The Toros dip to 7-5 overall, and 1-3 in CCAA play.

Both teams came out firing, with neither team showing any signs of rust after the break.  Cougar Darnell Tayler displayed the hottest hand, going for 17 first half points on 6-of-9 shooting that included 2-of-3 from down town.

Dooley, meanwhile, replied with seven points on 3-of-4 shooting as the Toros trailed 44-41 entering the break.

After the half, however, the Cougars exploded offensively, scoring 51 points on 66.7% shooting from the floor.

CSUSM took a 12-point lead at 54-42 at the 17:06 mark, before consecutive triples by Vincent Golson gave the Toros life by cutting their deficit in half.  Another 3-pointer, this time by Brandon Woods on the left key, brought CSUDH to within three at 14:50, only to have the Cougars drain two threes of their own to push their lead to nine.

Jonathan Nichols' energy provided a spark, with his triple getting CSUDH to within 60-54, before four consecutive points by Nichols brought the Toros to 62-60 midway through the period, with a Nichols fastbreak layup knotting the score at 64.

With the Toros staying in contention down just 75-74 at the 6:07 mark, CSUSM went on a 7-0 run to take control of the contest, with Taylor's 13 second half points going with Akachi Okugo's 11 points spurring the Cougar charge.

The Toros got to wihtin six at 82-76 on a Golson layup, but it was all CSUSM after that in the eventual 11-point win.

Golson and Nichols added 15 each while Darius Butler chipped in with 12.

San Marcos utilized its size in the paint against the diminuative Toros, outscoring them by 18.

CSUDH resumes action on Saturday, January 2, hosting No. 21 Chico State for a 7:30 pm first tip in the Torodome.
