Sadler's Career Night Lifts Toros to Convincing 90-72 Win over Coyotes

CARSON -- Junior Justin Sadler moved into a tie third place for rebounds in a single game as his 19 boards, coupled with 20 points, led Cal State Dominguez Hills to a runaway 90-72 win over perennial power Cal State San Bernardino on a rainy Saturday night.

With the win, CSUDH picks up its first CCAA win of the year in improving to 7-4, 1-2 CCAA, while the Coyotes remain winless in CCAA play, falling to 3-5, 0-4 CCAA.

"I was really
proud of our ability to bounce back after a tough loss to UCSD and play the kind basketball we are capable of," begins CSUDH interim head coach Steve Becker.  "Our defense in the second half allowed us to separate ourselves and play with extreme confidence and tonight was a great overall team win with each of our guys playing a major role in tonight's win.

"Vincent Golson
played at a high level tonight and was a huge reason we had success while Justin dominated down low with his offensive rebounds giving us a great deal of second chance opportunities and Ivan Dooley found his rhythm in the second half and continued to hit big shots."

Here's Sadler on his career night.

Both teams found their stroke early with Golson leading all scorers with 14 points in the first half, aided by Sadler's 12 and 10 by Shaquille Hunter.  After the teams found themselves tied at 8-8, the Toros went on a 7-0 run to take the lead, with a Golson triple accounting for the final three points in the run.

The lead reached double figures at 20-10 on a Sadler free throw with 12:25 left, until the Coyotes closed the half on a 6-1 one to enter the break trailing by just 50-45.

Darius Butler gave the Toros another 10-point lead three minutes into the second half, with Brandon Woods pushing the lead to 16 at 65-49 on a layup two minutes later.

The visitors, however, took advantage of a cold spell by the Toros and closed the gap to 65-61 midway through the period, and to 67-64 after Juan Martinez sank three free throws after being fouled while attempting a 3-pointer.

A Dooley triple and Sadler layup gave the Toros breathing room at 72-64 at the 7:15 mark, with two more triples by Dooley surrounding a pair of Golson free throws putting even more room between the hosts and their guests in the eventual 90-72 win.

Sadler, Golson and Dooley all finished with 20 points, with Sadler's 20 boards tying him with Joe Bertrand (1/23/93, 2/19/94) and Anthony Blackmon (12/17/88), who each pulled down 19 boards more than 20 years ago.

CSUDH finished shooting at a 53.6% clip, including a solid 73.3% from the foul line as the Toros earned their first win against the Coyotes since the 2010-11 season, curtailing an 8-game losing streak.

The Toros have nearly two weeks off before resuming action on New Year's Eve, hosting Cal State San Marcos for a 3 pm first tip in the Torodome.
