CCAA Names Alfaro Defender of the Year, Flanagan Coach

POMONA -- After leading their team to a 9-1-2 record en route to the program's eighth California Collegiate Athletic Association regular-season championship, eight members of Cal State Dominguez Hills' men's soccer team landed in the all-conference selection with senior Tony Alfaro winning Defensive Player of the Year and Joe Flanagan earning his fifth Coach of the Year award.

The conference announced the postseason awards at its awards banquet on the campus of Cal Poly Pomona Thursday night.

Midfielder Joey Chica joins Alfaro on the first-team all-conference list, goalkeeper Chase Gentry, midfielder D'Morea Alewine, forwards Mike Dias and Pedro Velasquez were named to the second team while midfielder Jaime Rios and defender Ehi Isibor received honorable mention.

Cal Poly Pomona's Christian Gonzalez won the CCAA Offensive Player of the Year, his teammate Nadeer Ghantous earned Freshman of the Year and Chico State's Omar Nuno won the Newcomer of the Year honor.

Although Alfaro was forced to miss the season-opener to serve a red card suspension he received last year, he made quite an impact in his return, starting all 17 matches, logging in 1,554 minutes and leading the defense to an impressive 0.67 goals-against average. He also contributed to the offense by scoring five goals and adding an assist. In fact, he was a perfect 4-for-4 on the penalty kick.

Alfaro is the first Toro to earn the defensive honor since Kevin Gallaugher won it in 2009.

Flanagan wins his first CCAA Coach of the Year in 10 years after leading a team that was predicted to finish third in the CCAA before the season kicked off. Following the season-opening defeat to Point Loma, the Toros went on a 16-match unbeaten streak and outscored opponents 40-12.

The Toros also climbed up the national ranks under Flanagan's leadership, reaching as high as No. 5. They are ninth in the country this week while having been on top of the NCAA West Regional rankings the last three weeks.

First-seeded CSUDH takes on Stanislaus State in the semifinal round of the CCAA Tournament Friday at 4:30 p.m. The winner will meet either host Cal Poly Pomona or Cal State L.A. for the championship Sunday at 3 p.m.
