Hunter's Career-High Gives Toros Edge in 84-77 Win Over Stanislaus State

CARSON -- Senior swingman Shaquille Hunter drained nine of his 13 shots in a rare Monday afternoon contest en route to a career-high 23 points as Cal State Dominguez Hills took an 84-77 win over visiting Stanislaus State in a non-conference match-up.

The Toros improve to 5-2 with their fourth-straight win, with the 84 points scored marking the fourth time this year CSUDH has eclipsed the 80-point mark after last reaching that plateau two seasons ago, on January 31, 2014.

"The selflessness we showed tonight through sharing the basketball at a high level was key in this win, and I'm proud of our effort tonight," begins interim head coach Steve Becker.

"Shaq, Justin Sadler and Vincent Golson found their rhythm early and Ivan Dooley's defense in the second half was critical to our team's success, especially in the last five minutes."

This also marks the program's best start over the first seven games of a season since the 2010-11 squad opened its CCAA Tournament Championship season going 6-1, which included wins over No. 24 BYU-Hawai'i, No. 3 St. Cloud State and No. 1 Cal Poly Pomona en route to an overall 23-7 overall finish.

Here's Hunter on tonight's big win.

The two teams lit it up in the first half with the Warriors connecting for 48.6% of their shots, led by Alek Carlson's 11 and Christian Bayne's 10 points.  CSUDH, however, led by Hunter's 14 first-half total, connected for exactly 50% of its shots as the squads played to a stalemate in the first 20 minutes of play.

In the second half, the Warriors nearly matched their first-half effort by making 46.7% of their attempts from the field, but the hosts fired on even more of their cylinders as they made 17 of 28 shots from the floor (60.7%), with Vincent Golson's drive leading to 14 points and Justin Sadler's inside presence producing 12 points.

After the squads exchanged leads early in the second, a Golson fastbreak bucket at the 15:31 mark gave CSUDH a 51-50 lead, one they would not relinquish the rest of the night.

CSUDH reached its largest lead of the night at 67-60 on a triple by Hunter at the 8:02 mark, until the Warriors went on a 13-7 run to cut their deficit to one.

An Arthur Caldwell jumper from the foul line, however, provided an answer and a 3-point lead, and after Stanislaus replied with another basket, Caldwell answered again for another 3-point lead with 2:29 left in regulation.

Sadler, who led all players with eight boards, increased the margin to five on an offensive putback with 48 ticks remaining for the final two of his 20 points, and four-straight freebies by Golson down the stretch sealed the Monday night win to give the junior point guard transfer 19 on the night, good for his career high.

A key component of tonight's decision was distribution and ball-sharing as CSUDH tallied 24 assists on 32 buckets, compared to 16 assists on 31 Warrior baskets.

CSUDH takes to the road tomorrow night for an exhibition at Cal State Fullerton, before opening its CCAA schedule on the road at Cal Poly Pomona on Saturday.
