Toros Three-Point Record Falls in 81-78 Win over Alaska Anchorage

ANCHORAGE, Alaska -- Cal State Dominguez Hills set a school record with 19 3-pointers made en route to an 81-78 win over host Alaska Anchorage in the Seawolf Jamboree.

Ivan Dooley led the Toros with 22 points on 7-of-11 shooting from the floor before fouling out with just over two minutes remaining, with all seven makes coming from behind the 3-point line to come within one 3-pointer shy of tying the school record shared by sharp-shooters John Nojima (1/24/87) and Pierson Williams (2/16/13, 2/18/14), who both drained eight triples.

Shaquille Hunter (pictured, left) drained four in the win, with Vincent Golson and Darius Butler each dropping three triples to push the Toros to 2-2 on the year.

Although the temperature outside read a brisk 29 degrees farenheit, the Toros heated up inside the Alaska Airlines Center to open play, connecting on an incredible 11-for-15 (73.3%) from long range as part of 18 total baskets made in the first half.

Justin Sadler and Butler shared first-half scoring honors with 10 each as the duo combined for 9 makes in 12 tries, pushing CSUDH to its first double-figure lead at 23-13 on a Butler triple, a lead that ballooned to as much as 17 with 2:21 left at 44-27, courtesy of a Brandon Woods 3-pointer.

The Toros cooled off their torrid pace from outside after the break, making just half of their 16 attempts, allowing the hosts to forge a comeback.

AAU cut its deficit to single digits just a minute and 35 seconds into the period before a Dooley long-range make pushed CSUDH's lead back to double digits at 52-40 at the 17:42 mark.

The lead was 12 until the Seawolves went on a 10-run to bring it to a 57-55 game, but another three by Dooley gave the Toros breathing room, with another triple, this time by Hunter at the 9:30 mark, giving CSUDH a 10-point lead at 72-62.

The Seawolves, however, weren't done yet, eventually knotting the game at 74-74 on a pair of Sekou Wiggs free throws four minutes later, before taking the lead on their next possession, the first since 17:01 of the first half.

CSUDH suffered a blow when Dooley picked up his 5th personal on an attempted layup by Wiggs, an infraction made more tantamount after Wiggs hit both free throws to put AAU up 78-77 with 2:15 left.

Hunter, however, picked up the 3-point slack, drilling one from long range on CSUDH's next possession to give the Toros the lead.

With just eight seconds left and after an AAU time out, the Seawolves miscommunicated on the inbounds pass, allowing Jonathan Nichols to steal the ball and get fouled.

After converting one of two freebies, Wiggs' desperation heave at the buzzer found everything but paydirt, securing the 81-78 decision for the Cardinal and Gold to snap AAU's 5-game winning streak as the Wolves dropped to 6-3 on the year.

The Toros hit nine of their first 11 3-point attempts to set the pace en route to finishing 19-of-31 and a 61.3% from downtown, but shot just 8-of-15 from the foul line to give the hosts a chance down the stretch.

Hunter finished with 16, Golson and Butler with 13 and Sadler with 10 to give the Toros five players in double-figure scoring, with Sadler's seven boards topping CSUDH's total.

For their efforts over the weekend, Dooley and Golson were named to the 2015 Seawolf Jamboree All-Tournament Team.

CSUDH continues its road non-conference schedule at Vanguard's Thanksgiving Classic, beginning Friday at 5:30 pm against San Diego Christian College.
