CCAA Rivals Meet in Texas for NCAA Championship Third Round

WICHITA FALLS, Texas -- The California Collegiate Athletic Association is in for a treat Friday as the conference's regular-season champions Cal State Dominguez Hills and tournament champions Cal Poly Pomona meet on the campus of Midwestern State University for the NCAA Championship third round Friday at 2 p.m. PT. The winner of the West Region final will meet the South Region champions Sunday.

Deep in the heart of the postseason
• Cal State Dominguez Hills is in its 13th appearance in the NCAA Men's Soccer Championship and its first since 2011. 
• The Toros are 17-8-3 (.732) in the NCAA postseason, 17-7-3 under 22-year head coach Joe Flanagan. Their first NCAA tournament appearance was in 1982.
• The Toros are in the third round for the first time since 2009 and the first under the 38-team bracket.
• Including the previous brackets, the Toros have made it to the third round four times.

A Quick Look at the Season
• The Toros had won their first CCAA regular-season championship since 2009. 
• CSUDH has losses to its column at the start and end of the regular season.
• The Toros went on a 16-match unbeaten streak, the longest run since the 2008 national championship team.
• In addition, the Toros have won as many as eight straight.
• Joe Flanagan earned his fifth CCAA Coach of the Year award and his first in a decade.
• Tony Alfaro was named CCAA Defensive Player of the Year along with 1st Team Honors.

North, south, east, west
• The Toros have been logging in mile this postseason. After going from Los Angeles to Seattle; Seattle back to LA and now from LA to Dallas/Fort Worth, CSUDH has flown approximately 3,667 miles.

Toros in Texas
• The last time CSUDH was in the state of Texas was in 2001, when it defeated West Texas A&M 2-0 in the NCAA quarterfinal.

Rivals meet in the Lone star state
• CSUDH & CPP may be 34 miles apart from each other, BUT, the two schools will travel 1,359 miles to Wichita Falls, Texas to play each other for the NCAA West Region final.
• This is the first time the two CCAA schools will meet in a NCAA Championship match.
• CSUDH and Cal Poly Pomona played to a 2-2 double-overtime draw back in late September.
• The Toros ended up winning the CCAA regular-season tournament while the Broncos clinched the conference tournament crown.
• The last time CSUDH met a CCAA opponent in the national postseason is in 2009, when it defeated both Sonoma State (3-0) and CSLA (1-0).

NOTES AFTER the second round
• It was only the third time in program history the Toros were in a shootout during the NCAA tournament, with the last being in 2007 against CCAA rivals Sonoma State. The Seawolves advanced in the second round.
• It is the first time in program history the Toros advanced to the next round after winning a shootout.
• The last time the Toros picked up a postseason win at a host school was in 2009, when they knocked out crosstown rivals Cal State L.A. 1-0 in the West Regional final.
