No. 11 Cal Baptist Escapes With 75-72 Win as Dooley Drops 22

RIVERSIDE -- Senior Ivan Dooley opened his final campaign with a flurry after pouring in a game-high 22 points, but No. 11 Cal Baptist held off a fast-charging Cal State Dominguez Hills squad en route to a thrilling 75-72 win for the Lancers in the PacWest/CCAA Challenge.

CSUDH went for 44 points after the half in the loss, dropping them to 0-1 to begin the season.

The Toros showed no fear in taking on the 11th-ranked team on their home court, riding eight points by Jonathan Nichols, seven by Shaquille Hunter and six by Dooley to stay within striking distance late in the half, taking a 28-27 lead on a Justin Sadler layup before the hosts closed the half with a 9-0 run to head into intermission up 36-28.

Cal Baptist looked to blow the game open after the break, taking a 44-30 lead just minutes into the second session.

Behind Dooley and Sadler buckets, however, the Toros clawed to within 44-40 at 14:20 before knotting the score at 58-58 six minutes later.

The Lancers answered with a 6-0 run to give the hosts breathing room until a Hunter bucket in the paint brought the Cardinal and Gold to 72-70 with 1:17 left in the game.

After the teams split the next four points, Jordan Giusti gave CSUDH a chance to tie after converting just one of two freebies, but a last-second 3-point attempt by Dooley at the buzzer went awry, sealing CBU's win and keeping the Lancers perfect at 4-0 to start the season.

The Toros sizzled in the second half to the tune of a 60.7% success rate, but missed four of 11 attempts at the line after the break.

Sadler added 17 points after a slow start, while Hunter chipped in 11 in the loss.

The Toros continue the PacWest/CCAA Challenge tomorrow against Holy Names, set for a 5:00 pm tip.
