Unbeaten Streak Hits 10 as No. 14 Toros Make Most of Opportunities in 3-0 Win Over Cougars

CARSON -- Visiting Cal State San Marcos outshot host and 14th-ranked Cal State Dominguez Hills by a 20-16 count, but the Toros made the most of their chances with three first-half goals in a span of exactly 11 minutes en route to a 3-0 blanking of the Cougars on both a rainy and sunny Sunday afternoon at Toro Stadium.

Bruno Montini played a part in the win, having a hand in all three scores including the second after collecting a loose ball and knocking it into the goal, as CSUDH moved to 8-1-2, 4-0-2 CCAA and remained the only school in the league to be unbeaten in league play while sitting just one point behind Stanislaus State for the top spot.

Here's Montini's take on the convincing win.

Despite being outshot 11-9 in the first half, the CCAA's second leading scorer in Mike Dias showed why he is amongst the league's best as he took a flicked pass from Montini inside the box and shuttled his right-footed shot to San Marcos keeper's Zach Sheppard's left, where it hit off the post and into the goal for a 1-0 lead at the 4:14 mark.

The lead doubled nine minutes later as Montini did the honors himself, taking a cross from Gabriel Rivera and punching it past Sheppard for a 2-nil lead.

Before the Cougars had a chance to regroup, Montini again forced the action deep in CSUSM's box, getting fouled in the box to warrant a penalty kick attempt, which Tony Alfaro put away for a 3-0 lead at the 15:14 mark.

That was plenty for Toro keeper Chase Gentry and the Toro defense, which notched its second-consecutive shutout and Gentry's third overall.

With the game comfortably in hand, the Toros were able to use 22 players in the contest, with Frankie Perez just missing on two opportunities late in the game to score, including a blast that hit off the crossbar that Sheppard could only watch after being out of position.

The Cougars also won the corner category by a 6-2 count with Sheppard making 4 saves compared to 6 for Gentry.

CSUDH takes on BYU-Hawai'i for a non-conference tilt on Tuesday at 4:30 pm, before hosting Chico State on Friday for a 7 pm clash.  As always, all home games will be streamed online on CollegeTVTicket for a minimal fee, with Marc Serber calling all the action.
