No. 5 Toros Crowned CCAA Regular Season Champions After 1-0 Win at CSUEB

HAYWARD -- Needing just one win over the final two regular season California Collegiate Athletic Association games to claim the CCAA regular season title outright, senior Rayane Bouarroudj hammered home the first and only goal of tonight's contest at Cal State East Bay to give visiting and No. 5 ranked Cal State Dominguez Hills a 1-0 win over the Pioneers, the 8th CCAA regular season title in the program's history.

With the crown, CSUDH also earns the top seed and a first-round bye in next weekend's CCAA Tournament, with the semifinals and final being held at Cal Poly Pomona.

"It's great to be back in the CCAA Tournament, and to be the No. 1 seed in this conference is a great accomplishment," begins head coach Joe Flanagan, taking a well-deserved and deep breath after the Toros claimed their first regular season crown since 2005.  "I'm happy for our boys because they deserve it.

"We've had a great season so far and are looking forward to oru next game against Stanislaus as well as the CCAA Tournament."

CSUDH currently stands at 29 points, with Cal Poly Pomona (23), Cal State L.A. (22) and Stanisalus State (22) fighting for the No. 2 seed and the second bye.

In addition to those three teams, Sonoma State, UC San Diego and Chico State all remain in contention for one of six total postseason berths with one game left in the regular season.

The offensive-minded Pioneers took it to the Toros in the early going by out-shooting the visitors 10-5 in the first 45 minutes of play, but CSUDH's defense, led by senior Tony Alfaro and junior Bryan Haley limited CSUEB to just one shot on goal, which was saved by keeper Chase Gentry.

Zeroes remained on the board until the 54th minute when Bouarroudj struck for his second goal of the season, taking a Pedro Velasquez feed from Israel Murguia and striking it past CSUEB keeper Adrian Topete.

Bouarroudj's blast was one of just three shots CSUDH fired off in the second half as the Toro offense struggled to get on track tonight, but its defense more than made up for it despite 18 total shots and a 6-0 edge in corners for the hosts.

CSUDH, which will make its 16th appearance in the CCAA tournament next weekend and will be looking for its 8th tournament crown, concludes its regular season on Saturday against the league's top offensive team in the Warriors, who have clinched a berth and currently are tied for fourth place in league play.
