Miscues Cue 67-57 Loss at Chico State

CHICO -- Looking to stop a modest two-game skid as well as its free throw shooting woes, Cal State Dominguez Hills connected for 73.3% from the line, but committed eight more turnovers tonight as host Chico State took a 67-57 win tonight in Acker Gymnasium.

Jonathan Nichols (pictured) put up a career-high 13 points in the loss while Justin Sadler pulled down a game-high 13 rebounds with nine points as the Toros slip to 5-15, 1-13 CCAA.

"All the credit goes to head coach Greg Clink and good Chico team, that competed and closed the game out when they needed to," begins CSUDH interim head coach Steve Becker.

"We battled two of the best rebounding teams in the conference and did a tremendous job, and I'm really happy with our effort and efficiency on the glass this weekend.

"The next step for our evolving group is to find a way to close games, and we're looking forward to getting home to the Torodome next week!"

Chico State's Robert Duncan scored a career-high 23 points as the Wildcats won their seventh-straight to maintain their shared spot atop the league.

Nichols kept the Toros in the game in the first half with eight points, but 3-point shooting got the best of the guests after making just one in seven tries as the hosts took a 35-27 lead entering the half.

The Toros took charge after intermission, cutting their deficit to 39-36 with four minutes elapsed after a Jonathan Sadler bucket in the paint to end a 6-0 run.

That momentum continued continued eight minutes later as a layup by Josh Brown brought CSUDH to within 47-46, with a Darnell Martin three throw knotting the game at 47-47 with 8:06 left in regulation.

After a Wildcat free throw put a halt into the Toro run, Nichols nailed a triple to give CSUDH its first lead of the game at 50-48.

CSUC, however, would answer, using a 14-6 run to again regain control of the game, with clutch free throw shooting down the stretch bringing the game to its final tally.

Martin added 11 points in the loss while Sadler again had a monster effort, tallying 13 boards and nine points.

CSUDH returns home on Friday to host perennial power CS San Bernardino, with first tip set for 7:30 pm.
