Turnovers and Free Throws the Difference in 53-48 Loss at CS Stanislaus

TURLOCK -- Sophomore Justin Sadler enjoyed another solid game with 15 points and 10 boards, but host and defending CCAA Tournament Champion Cal State Stanislaus used six less turnovers and a .526 success rate at the line by Cal State Dominguez Hills in taking a competitive 53-48 win over the Toros tonight in Fitzpatrick Arena.

The Toros fall to 5-14, 1-12 with the loss.

"I'm proud of the effort our team put on the floor tonight, but the shots simply weren't falling," begins CSUDH interim head coach Steve Becker.

"But we did a great job on the glass, especially Justin and Darnell Martin, and we're excited about the opportunity to take on Chico State tomorrow night."

CSUDH stayed in the game over the first 20-minute stretch, using eight points by Sadler and five by Shaquille Hunter to trail by just two at 23-21 entering the break.

A Hunter triple early with five minutes elapsed in the second half gave the Toros the lead at 30-28, only to see the Warriors answer with a 7-0 run to regain the lead at 35-30.

A Darnell Martin tip-in after a Sadler freebie brought the Toros to within two at 35-33 at the 10:33 mark, with an Ivan Dooley freebie after a Warrior technical foul nine minutes later again bringing CSUDH to within 44-42.

CSUS, however, held firm down the stretch as seven of eight makes in the final 1:15 closed any hopes of a CSUDH comeback in the 5-point win.

Hunter added 13 points in the loss with Martin pulling down a game-high 13 boards.

Free throws again were costly as CSUDH made just 10-of-19 tries, with the Warriors converting on 14-of-24 attempts.

CSUDH's road doesn't get any easier tomorrow night as the Toros travel to Chico State to face the Wildcats, with first tip set for 7:30 pm.
