Toros Pick Up First CCAA Win of Year in 73-67 Decision at Sonoma State

ROHNERT PARK -- Newcomer Shaquille Hunter has never referred to himself as The Big Aristotle, but there could have been a case made tonight for that likeness after his 22-point performance on 9-of-15 shooting from the field that led Cal State Dominguez Hills to its first California Collegiate Athletic Association victory tonight in a 73-67 win at Sonoma State.

"I'm thrilled for our team to experience some success by playing together and for one another," begins CSUDH interim head coach Steve Becker.

"Shaq made some huge plays for us and Emmett Duval's big first half was a huge factor in our ability to be up at halftime, while Brandon Woods and Justin Sadler stepped up and made critical free throws down the stretch, which has been our Achilles' heel all year.

"Sonoma is very good and very well coached and they made us work to the end, but I'm happy with our ability to finish this game, and we need to build on this and not forget what got us this win," Becker concludes.

The Seawolves (9-7, 6-6 CCAA) fall into a four-way tie for fifth place in the conference standings heading into the second half of the CCAA schedule, while the Toros move to 5-13 overall and 1-11 in league play.

It was a back-and-forth affair for the first 10 minutes of play, but visiting the visitors turned a 14-12 deficit into a 37-26 lead at the half, a lead the Toros would never relinquish.  Sonoma would get as close as five points late in the second half, but CSUDH hit 13 of its final 16 free throws in the last three minutes of the contest to secure the six-point win.

In the end, Sonoma State was held to 39.6 percent shooting on 19 of 48 from the floor -- just 7 of 19 (36.8 percent) from long range.  Cal State Dominguez Hills connected on half of its shots (24 for 48) and, on defense, forced 14 turnovers, 12 by way of steals.  The Toros also outrebounded the Seawolves, 31-26.

Four CSUDH players scored in double-figures, including Hunter, Duvall (15),  Woods (12) and Sadler (10).

CSUDH finished hitting 19-of-26 (.731) from the foul line, the first time since December 19 of last year that the Toros have hit over .700 from the charity stripe, a game that the Toros won over Bristol, 79-66.

The Toros continue their CCAA road swing next weekend at CS Stanislaus and Chico State, before returning home on February 6 to face CS San Bernardino.
