Three Double-Figure Scorers Not Enough in 66-60 Loss at SFSU

SAN FRANCISCO -- Senior Darnell Martin celebrated his daughter's birthday by leading Cal State Dominguez Hills in both scoring and rebounds, but it wasn't enough as host San Francisco State connected for 20-of-23 from the foul line in taking a 66-60 win over the Toros tonight in The Swamp.

The Toros fall to 4-13, 0-11 CCAA, having lost their last seven contests.

CSUDH got off to a slow start in the first half despite making half its shots.  The Gators, however, capitalized with eight poitns off 15 Toro turnovers as well as a decisive 21-12 edge in bench points to take a 34-26 lead after the first period.

After a Martin bucket to open the second-half scoring gave CSUDH hope at 34-28, SFSU scored the next six points to take a 40-28 lead with 15:36 left in regulation.

That's where the lead hovered until a tip-in by Shaquille Hunter, a free throw by Jonathan Nichols, triple by Ivan Dooley and an old-fashioned 3-point play by Martin brought the Toros to within a point at 45-44 eight minutes later, eventually taking the lead on a Dooley triple, their first lead since 18:20 of the first half.

The Gators, however, answered with a 7-1 run of their own to go up 57-52 with 3:47 left, pushing it to as much as eight points until a Josh Brown layup at the buzzer accounted for the final tally.

Dooley and Hunter finished with 11 points apiece in the loss as CSUDH continued its difficulties at the line, making just 10 of 17 attempts.

CSUDH will look to earn its first win in CCAA play tomorrow night, taking on Sonoma State at 7:30 pm.
