Toros Hold On Over Broncos in 73-69 Barnburner

CARSON -- In a rematch of the California Collegiate Athletic Association championship game, Cal State Dominguez Hills' Monay Lee's 21 points led four Toros in double-figure scoring as the Toros took a frenetic 73-69 win over visiting Cal Poly Pomona, despite a 32-point effort by All-American Jada Blackwell.

The Toros gain sole control of 2nd place in league play with their fourth-straight win, and 11th in their last 12, in moving to 13-4, 8-1 CCAA.

"Every healthy player played in this game and contributed, and I was really pleased with our effort and liked our toughness both mentally and physically," begins CSUDH head coach Molly Goodenbour, obviously elated.

"Monay was really assertive and did a great job of attacking them and it was a great team win, but now we need to be prepared for UCSD tomorrow."

The Toros opened up a 38-33 lead at the half behind 29 combined points from Lee and Breanne Garcia, despite shooting under 40% from the field.

CSUDH pushed its lead to double figures early in period two on a Talia Rayford jumper at the 17:30 mark, and to 12 at 49-37 on a Rayford free throw two minutes later.

The lead hovered around the double-digit mark until a 5-0 run brought the Broncos to 57-55 on a Blackwell layup at 7:25, before another Blackwell bucket gave the Broncos a 62-61 lead with 4:02 left in regulation.

The teams tied twice more over the next three minutes, until a Lee jumper and three free throw makes by Rayford and Lee iced the game.

Blackwell wound up making half of her 24 shots from the floor that included a couple threes and 6-of-9 form the foul line, also adding eight boards in the loss that showcased her dominance down low.

"Blackwell is such a talented player and difficult matchup for us, but I thought we did a decent job on the rest of their team, and Talia especially was able to keep Marsh in check, which was huge."

Garcia finished with 16, Rayford with 15 and Tayler Champion with 12 with Lee tallying 10 board to give her the game's lone double-double.

Defense keyed tonight's win as CSUDH picked up seven steals compared to just one for the guests, while 21-of-26 shooting from the line (.808) aided the Toro cause.

CSUDH continues hosting duty tomorrow night against UC San Diego, which dropped a 65-63 heartbreaker at Cal State L.A. earlier tonight.
