Tritons Get Technical in 60-55 Win

CARSON -- The euphoria from last night's intense victory over defending NCAA West Region Champion Cal Poly Pomona turned into disappointment tonight as visiting UC San Diego converted four free throws after two technical fouls assessed to Cal State Dominguez Hills in the second half as the Tritons took a 60-55 win tonight in the Torodome, snapping CSUDH's four-game win streak.

Monay Lee again led the Toros in the loss, falling to 13-5, 8-2 CCAA and back into a second place tie in league play with Cal Poly Pomona, which downed Cal State L.A. earlier tonight.

"We knew Pomona took a lot out of us mentally and physically and that tonight would be a tough game, and it showed," begins CSUDH head coach Molly Goodenbour.

"We could never get in rhythm and UCSD did a better job of staying poised and finishing the plays when they had the opportunities."

The Tritons jumped to a 32-23 halftime lead behind nine points by Farrah Shokoor, with five coming via free throws after CSUDH was whistled for nine fouls compared to five for the guests, which UCSD converted for seven points in 10 attempts.

CSUDH made a run to start the second half, cutting the deficit to 36-32 on a Lee triple at the 17:38 mark.  UCSD's lead stood at 41-36 at the 15:03 mark, when both schools went cold until 10:26 when a Tayler Champion jumper cut the drought to make the score 41-38.

The Tritons, however, went on a 5-0 run to go up eight, with two coming after the Toros were assessed a technical foul at the 9:44 mark, and then kept their lead at eight after another tech was issued leading to two more free throw makes in a span of 66 seconds.

A late run fueled by Kielyn Wilson and Anandi Jimenez free throws brought the Toros to within three points twice with an old-fashioned 3-point play by Talia Rayford bringing them to 56-55 with 54 ticks left in regulation.

UCSD, however, sank four of its final five free throw attempts while the Toros suffered through two missed shots, three fouls and a turnover over the final minute in the loss.

Rayford added 13 points with Jimenez and Breanne Garcia chipping in nine each as UCSD forged a 45-40 rebound edge.

The Toros will take to the road for consecutive weekends before returning home on Friday, February 6, to face CS San Bernardino.
