Broncos Use First-Half Push to Take 59-46 Win

CARSON -- Perennial power Cal Poly Pomona raced out to an 11-point first half lead, and held off offensive spurts by Cal State Dominguez Hills in the second half to take a 59-46 win over the Toros to kick off the weekend homestand.

Justin Sadler led all players with 23 points on 8-of-10 shooting from the floor, including a perfect 7-of-7 from the foul line as CSUDH fell to 4-11, 0-9 CCAA.

"We faced a very tough team tonight, and our slow start was simply too much to overcome," begins CSUDH interim head coach Steve Becker.

"I'm really proud of our competitive effort in the second half, and enjoyed watching Justin being dominant tonight and continue making a strong case for himself to be considered one of the better bigs in the CCAA.

"We are eager to get back to action tomorrow night against a very good UCSD team."

It was the Terrence Drisdom show in the first half as the CPP senior scored 10 of his team's 25 points en route to an 11 point edge, with the cold-shooting Toros making just five shots in 22 tries.

The Toro deficit reached 13 early in the second half until a 7-0 run cut the lead to 29-23, fueled by a Sadler flush and triple by Jonathan Nichols with just under four minutes elapsed in the half.

CPP, however, answered by pushing its lead back up to 13, until a David Gonzalez triple with 11:01 ended a CSUDH surge to bring the Toros back to within 40-33.

That was the extent of CSUDH's run as the guests pushed their lead to a game-high 16 points thrice en route to the eventual 13-point final.

Turnovers and poor free throw shooting proved too tough a combo to overcome as CPP capitalized with an 18-9 points off turnover surplus, and on CSUDH's 35.6% shooting from the floor.

CSUDH will look to pick up its first league win of the year tomorrow night against the Tritons, who picked up a 67-56 win over the Golden Eagles earlier tonight.
