Quick Hits Down Toros in 2-1 Loss to Marymount California

Box Score

CARSON -- A pair of goals 103 seconds apart by visiting Marymount California University at the start of the second half turned a 1-0 Cal State Dominguez Hills lead into a 2-1 disadvantage, and provided the margin of victory for the Mariners in a non-conference tilt on an uncomfortably hot afternoon in Toro Stadium.

Pedro Velasquez began the scoring with a one-touch goal in the 17th minute as CSUDH dipped to 1-3-1 on the year.

The Loyola Marymount transfer got the scoring started early after Andrew Johnson launched the ball from midfield to Tony Alfaro on the left side.  Alfaro then sent a cross to the goalmouth, where Velasquez one-touched it past MCU keeper Clark Lydon far post for an early 1-0 edge.

That's where the score stood until the second half, when the visitors knotted the game at 1-1.

Gima Terrence collected a deflected ball inside the box and sent a blast past Toro keeper Dylan Roberts for the equalizer at 49:13, and before the Toros could recover, took the lead for good after Jonas Springer took a Kevin Faye feed and sent a bullet to the far post, where it richocheted into the back of the net for a 2-1 lead at 50:56.

Marymount upped its offense after intermission, tallying a 6-2 edge in shots while taking two corners compared to nil for the Toros.

Marymount's keeper also made a pair of saves after the break to keep the Mariners close in the second half, one on an Alfaro header in the 54th minute and the final save in the 87th minute on an attempt by Tim Harty.

CSUDH will tackle Cal State L.A. on the road for a non-conference contest on September 20, before returning home to host the University of Antelope Valley three days later in its final tune-up before California Collegiate Athletic Association play begins at home on September 26 against Chico State.
