Golden Eagles Take Opener to Snap Toro Win Streak

Box Score

LOS ANGELES -- Host Cal State L.A. broke a 2-2 tie with four runs in the bottom of the seventh and withstood a bases-loaded, no-out jam in the ninth to escape with a 6-3 win in the opening game of the final CCAA series of the year for both teams.

Kamran Young led the Toros with a 3-for-4, 2 run, 2 RBI performance in the loss that drops CSUDH to 21-15, 15-22 CCAA.

The CSULA win also put an end to a frustrating 15-game losing streak that saw the Golden Eagles go winless in April.

David Armas  had a strong performance for the Golden Eagles in his final start for the program. He worked eight strong innings and got the win after allowing only seven hits and three runs. He carried a 6-2 lead into the ninth inning and, after allowing the first two batters to reach base, was replaced by Reed Reznicek.  After allowing a hit to the first batter he faced, Reznicek got the final three outs.

The Golden Eagles were helped by a strong defensive play in the ninth. With the bases loaded, Taylor Kahanowitch's sacrifice fly made it 6-3, but Hayden Maurice was thrown out trying to advance from second to third by catcher Cody Doyle and Reznicek got the final out for the save.

Doyle was also a star at the plate, lining a triple to the right-field corner that cleared the bases as part of a four-run seventh inning that broke a 2-2 tie.

Cal State Dominguez Hills got a two-run home run from Kamran Young that tied the game at 2-2 in the sixth inning. An inning later, Doyle's three-run triple put the Golden Eagles ahead for good.

David Haerle started for the Toros and gave up six hits and six runs. Aaron Gray and Bubby Rossman each pitched a scoreless inning of relief.

The two teams continue the split series tomorrow at Reeder Field, with first pitch set for 6 pm.
