Toros Cruise to 12-2 Win Over Bethesda in Non-Conference Action

Box Score

CARSON -- Senior Danny Nieves tossed 3.0 innings of four-hit ball while five Cal State Dominguez Hills players drove in two runs each as the Toros cruised to a 12-2 win over visiting Bethesda Christian University on a warm Tuesday afternoon on Toro Field.

Coming off two wins to close last weekend's series against San Francisco State, today's victory moves the Toros to 21-24 overall with four game left in the 2014 season.

Junior lefty Winston Lavendier perhaps was the most impressive player on the afternoon, fanning all six batters he faced in 2.0 innings of work, including four who were caught looking.

The Toros took a 2-0 lead in the second after Kahanowitch drove home his first run on an RBI baseknock, followed by Joshua Flores' RBI single to third base.

The Flames cut their deficit in half in their next at-bat, but that would be as close as they would get as CSUDH would score 10 runs over the next four innings to put the game away with two runs coming in the fourth on a Flame error and another Flores RBI, three in the fifth on a Bubby Rossman RBI single that followed a double steal by Danny Haley and Peter Ives.

CSUDH added three more in the sixth on a Bubby Rossman bases loaded walk and a Flame error that scored two, and two more in the seventh on an Ives 2RBI triple for a 12-1 lead.

The Flames added a solo run in the eighth, but it was too little too late in the 12-2 final.

Five Toro pitches combined in the win, with Nieves picking up the victory after his pre-determined 3.0 innings of work.

Kahanowitch led all batters with three hits, with Haley and Flores added two each.  Haley also scored thrice with David Steininger, Ives and Rossman each crossing the plate twice.

The Toros will conclude their 2014 season against cross-town rival Cal State L.A. in a split series, with the first two single games taking place on Thursday and Friday at Reeder Field, both at 6 pm.
