Yates Rates Great as Toros Take 4-1 Win Over Gators in Series Finale

Box Score

CARSON -- Making his first start of the 2014 campaign and just the second start in his Cal State Dominguez Hills career, junior Cody Yates held visiting San Francisco State to just two hits over 6.0 shutout innings of work to lead the Toros to a 4-1 win and a series split.

The Toros move to 19-23, 14-20 CCAA with the win.

In stark contrast to Yates' last starting appearance on March 9, 2013, in which he lasted just three innings after allowing seven hits and nine runs, Yates allowed two hits to the first three batters he faced, but then settled down to retire 10 of the next 11 batters he faced before issuing a lead-off walk in the fifth.

Yates finished his afternoon by facing 23 total batters, just five over the minimum required for 6.0 innings of work, inducing 10 ground outs and five foul outs in 67 net pitches.

The Toro bats gave Yates an early lead in the second as Taylor Kahanowitch drove home Hayden Maurice, after Maurice was plunked leading off the frame.

CSUDH built the advantage to 4-0 in the sixth after Kahanowitch again drove home a runner after a hit by pitch, and scored himself on an error by the second baseman.

David Steininger completed the scoring with a sacrifice fly to left field, plating Aaron Gray who doubled earlier in the frame.

The Gators finally got on the scoreboard in the ninth off Gray, but it was too little too late after middle reliever Danny Nieves pitched a flawless two innings, making just six pitches total.

Gray led the offense with two hits in the win.

CSUDH resumes hosting duties on Tuesday as Bethesda Christian visits Toro Field for a non-conference contest, set for 2 pm on Toro Field.
