Gogue Flirts With No-No in Opener as Toros Sweep Otters, 6-1 and 7-1 (10)

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

SEASIDE -- Junior southpaw Jeffrey Gogue kept host Cal State Monterey Bay hitless for six and two-thirds of an inning as Cal State Dominguez Hills snapped its three-game skid in a 6-1 win over the Otters to open today's twinbill.

Scheduled to play a 7-inning nightcap, CSUDH exploded for six runs in the 10th to break open a 1-1 tie, taking the sweep with a 7-1 game two win to improve to 12-14, 7-11 CCAA.

The Toros opened the scoring in the opener with three runs in the third inning on four hits, the big blow coming on an Alex Sixtos 2RBI opposite field double after Jordan Yallen singled and Taylor Kahanowitch doubled to begin the frame.

After a groundout moved Sixtos to third, a deep Danny Haley fly out to center brought home Sixtos for the third and final run of the inning.

CSUDH added a single run an inning later after Yallen brought home Bubby Rossman with a sacrifice fly after Rossman launched a one-out double to right center and advanced to third on an Aaron Gray single, before adding another run in the sixth after Peter Ives led off the frame with a single, stole second, advanced to third on a ground out and scored on a wild pitch.

The only drama left in the game was whether Gogue would record CSUDH's first no-no since Bret Montgomery's back in 2010, and Gogue did his best by no-hitting CSUMB through the first 6.2 innings, before giving up a two-out double on a 1-1 count.

CSUDH had a chance to break the game wide open in the eight, but left the bases juiced before the Otters scraped across their lone run in the ninth.

Gogue tossed 103 pitches in the complete-game gem, allowing just three hits with four strikeouts.

Sixtos enjoyed a 3-for-3 effort with a pair of RBI, with David Steininger, Ives and Yallen each tallying a pair of hits in the win.

In the nightcap, the two teams were knotted at 1-1 after the top half of the third when CSUDH tied the game on an unearned run, a tie that stood for six more innings.

In the 10th inning, CSUDH batted around with Yallen starting the 6-run rally with a single before ending it on a fielder's choice nine batters later.

In between, the Toros roped five hits and capitalized on two Otter errors, with the big hits coming on an Ives big fly.

A quartet of Toro pitching held CSUMB in check with Tyler Mark and Joseph Perez combining for 8.0 innings and just three hits, with Perez's 5.1 innings of work holding the game for Aaron Gray, who tossed an inning to pick up the win.

The two teams will look to play single games both Saturday and Sunday, weather permitting.
