Toros Make it Two-Straight After 78-59 Win Over CS East Bay on Heroes Night

Box Score

CARSON -- On a night that local heroes were honored at halftime of tonight's men's basketball game, it was only fitting that three double-figure scoring heroes emerged in Cal State Dominguez Hills' 78-59 win over a feisty Cal State East Bay club, with Pierson Williams enjoying the most efficient night after his 15-point performance on 4-of-5 shooting from the floor, 3-of-3 from downtown and 4-of-4 from the free throw line.

The win moves the Toros to 7-14, 4-10 CCAA, while the Pioneers fall to 7-12, 4-9 CCAA.

After three ties over the first five minutes of play, the Toros ran out to an 8-point lead after three three-pointers fell, with two coming from Williams for a 23-15 lead five minutes later.

A Moriba DeFreitas layup gave CSUDH its first double-figure lead at 27-17, a lead that hit 16 at 37-21 with 1:43 to go after a Givon Crump made free throw, before a Williams launch from downtown to close the first half pushed the Toro lead to 41-23 entering intermission.

CSUDH increased its lead to 20 after a Darnell Martin free throw make, but the Pioneers cut their deficit by seven after a layup by Gabe Kindred at the 15:05 mark, only to have CSUEB's fouls accumulate which allowed the Toros to up their lead via the foul line, a lead that reached 22 with 2:20 left in regulation.

An intense game, five technicals were called with a total of 48 total whistles sounded, including 31 for the visitors that led to a +17 advantage at the foul line for the Toros.

Crump finished with 20 points with Martin chipping in 17 in the win as the Toros shot 45.7% from the floor and 58.3% from 3-point land, but were out-rebounded by eight that included 12 offensive boards by the Pios.

At halftime, CSUDH honored a collection of local heroes on "Heroes Appreciation Night," thanking those in attendance for their dedication, sacrifice and service.

The Toros take to the road next weekend for two CCAA tilts, starting at San Francisco State on Friday night.
