Chico State Takes 69-59 Win Over Toros

CARSON -- Visiting Chico State sprinted to a 35-20 halftime lead and withstood a late run by Cal State Dominguez Hills in taking a 69-59 win on the front end of this weekend's league double-header.

Three Toros scored nine points each in the loss in falling to 3-4, 0-2 CCAA.

"Tonight we faced a very good Chico State team, and saw firsthand how critical each and every possession is in the CCAA," begins interim head coach Steve Becker.

"I'm proud of how our guys responded in the second half, but it was too little, too late."

CSUDH misfired on 75% of its shots in the opening period as Chico took a 15-point lead, with Jordan Barton hitting 4-of-5 en route to 10 points in the first 20 minutes of play.

The Toros kept their deficit hovering around the 15-point mark after the break, until a Barton layup pushed Chico's lead to 58-38 at the 7:29 mark.

Down 60-38 two minutes later, a pair of Josh Brown free throws spurred a 14-0 run that saw CSUDH close to within 60-52 with 56 ticks left, but clutch free throw shooting by the Wildcats pushed their lead back to double-figures, with a Mike Hill triple accounting for the game's final score.

Brown, Ivan Dooley and Hill finished with nine points, while Justin Sadler pulled down seven boards in the loss as Chico out-rebounded CSUDH by 18.

CSUDH will look to rebound tomorrow night against the defending CCAA Tournament Champion CS Stanislaus Warriors, who defeated Cal State L.A. 64-55 earlier tonight.

Tomorrow's contest will be streamed live on College TV Ticket, with Marc Serber calling all the action.
