Fullerton Plays Like Titans in 72-50 Exhibition Win Over Toros

FULLERTON -- Host and Division I Cal State Fullerton connected on 48.1% of its shots from the floor in dealing visiting Cal State Dominguez Hills a 72-50 setback in an exhibition game at Titan Gym.

Ivan Dooley led the Toros with 16 points, tying for game-high honors.

"I was proud of the way we competed tonight  and came together as a team," says CSUDH interim head coach Steve Becker.  "We got good shots and simply weren't able to convert, especially in the first half.

"CSUF beat us up inside but I was again happy with Ivan, who was effective on the offensive end for us tonight."

The Titans opened up a 4-0 lead before a pair of Dooley free throws gave CSUDH its first edge of the night at 6-5.

CSUF, however, took control from there, pushing its advantage to double figures on a Moses Morgan jump shot with three minutes left in the half as part of a 13-2 run to close the frame as the Titans entered the break with a 30-17 lead.

A Dooley triple seven minutes into the second period brought CSUDH to within eight at 36-28, where the margin hovered over the next eight minutes.

CSUF regained its 13-point edge on a triple with less than 10 minutes remaining, and another 3-pointer brought the score to 55-35 with 7:21 left.

The lead grew to as large as 70-45 with two minutes to go, until a Jonathan Nichols bucket and Darius Butler triple helped bring the score to its final margin.

An achilles heel early, CSUDH drained all eight of its free throw attempts, but found the bottom of the net on just 8 of 25 tries from downtown.

"We need to build on this game, and continue to come together as a unit for tomorrow night's tip off vs Bristol."

The Toros resume their regular season tomorrow night with a non-conference contest hosting Bristol University, with first tip set for 7 pm in the Torodome.
