Cold Toro Shooting Gives Cal State L.A. Season Sweep in Cross-Town Rivalry

LOS ANGELES -- Host Cal State L.A. shot an efficient 53.7% from the floor including 45.5% from downtown as the Golden Eagles swept the regular season series over Cal State Dominguez Hills after this afternoon's 61-46 decision, despite a game-high 17 points from Ivan Dooley.

The Toros remain winless in league play at 0-4, while dropping to 3-6 overall.
 
The Golden Eagles ran their offense efficiently, held the Toros to just 34.1 percent shooting as they snapped a three-game losing streak with the victory.
 
Joshua Munzon had 15 points, three assists and three steals to lead the Golden Eagles, while Joel Brokenbrough had eight points, five rebounds and two blocks.

Jonathan Nichols had 10 points in the loss.
 
After their blistering first half effort from the floor, Cal State L.A. was even better in the second half, knocking down 10-of-18 from the floor (55.6 percent).
 
The Golden Eagles were 12-of-19 from the free-throw line, while the Toros were only 7-of-21. Both teams had 30 rebounds and Cal State L.A. had just 12 turnovers to 14 for Cal State Dominguez Hills. Cal State L.A. also had six blocked shots to help with its defensive effort.

Cal State L.A. scored the first five points of the game and led wire-to-wire. A dunk by Hall got it started and Munzon hit a 3-pointer, while an inside basket gave the Golden Eagles their first double-digit lead at 19-9 and a basket by Brokenbrough gave Cal State L.A. its biggest lead of the first half, 31-15.
 
A 3-pointer by Shaq Hunter got the Toros to within 33-25 at halftime.
 
A steal and layup by Chris Collins got the Toros to within four points, 37-33, three minutes into the second half, but the Golden Eagles got baskets by Alston and Hall to stop the run.
 
After the Toros pulled to within six points at 44-38 with 10 minutes to go, Cal State L.A. went on an 11-0 run to put the game away. Munzon scored the first seven points of the run with a 3-pointer, a steal and layup and two free throws. Watts and Snavely then hit baskets to give the Golden Eagles a 55-38 lead with 4:23 remaining.

The Toros travel to CS Fullerton for their final exhibition of the year on Thursday, before hosting Bristol University the next day for the final contest of the 2014 calendar year.
