Cal State Northridge Survives in 79-76 Exhibition Win Over Toros

NORTHRIDGE -- Cal State Dominguez Hills out-scored Division I and host Cal State Northridge 41-37 in the second half, but a Matador 42-35 first half lead was enough as Northridge survived in a 79-76 decision in the first exhibition for both teams.

Newcomer Ivan Dooley led the Toros with 16 points, while fellow newcomer Emmett Duvall (pictured) was one point and one rebound away from a double-double.

The hosts rolled to an early 8-1 lead to open the contest, doubling CSUDH's output at 20-10 on the first of two Stephen Maxwell freebies at 9:17.

Bolstered by a Shaquille Hunter triple, a Chris Collins bucket and a 3-pointer and two free throws by Ivan Dooley on consecutive possessions, CSUDH got to within 29-26 four minutes later until Northridge free throws kept the Toros at a distance en route to 7-point lead at the half.

The Matadors upped their edge to 13 at 48-35 less than three minutes into the second half, until the Toros made a run behind Dooley and Duvall to cut the deficit to nine.

The Toros kept the pressure on the hosts, getting to 61-60 on a Darius Butler 3-pointer with 9:35 left in regulation, finally getting over the hump on a Darnell Martin jump shot with less than 4:00 left to give CSUDH its first lead of the night at 71-70.

CSUN, however, went on a 5-0 run to regain control of the contest, withstanding a late push by the visitors including a Jonathan Nichols layup that brought CSUDH to within 76-75 with 49 ticks left and draining three free throws down the stretch to put the game away.

Hunter added 15 points with Nichols and Butler chipping in with nine each.

CSUDH excelled from the charity stripe as it drained 23-of-29, and hit 11-of-24 from downtown compared to just 2-of-5 for CSUN.

The Toros will open the 2014-15 season next Friday at the CBU Classic, taking on host Cal Baptist at 7 pm.
