Toros Triumphant Hopes Waved Away by Pepperdine, 79-68

MALIBU -- Junior guard/forward Monay Lee led Cal State Dominguez Hills with 19 points to lead a pair of Toros in double-figure scoring, but host Pepperdine University boasted four players with at least 10 points including Bria Richardson's 21 off the bench to take a competitive 79-68 exhibition win today at Firestone Fieldhouse, the final exhibition for both teams.

The Waves took a 32-26 lead at the half despite shooting just 32.4% from the floor.  Fortunately for the hosts, the Toros shot just 26.7%, including a dismal 12.5% (1-for-8) from long range.

CSUDH picked up its scoring after intermission by making 42.5% of their attempts including a solid 3-for-9 from downtown, but the hosts also warmed up in the second half to the tune of a 46.2% clip from the floor.  More decisively, Pepperdine drained five of its seven shots from 3-point land to keep the Toros at arm's length the rest of the way.

Foul shots again plagued the Toros as they made just 58.3% of their shots, following a 54.8% effort last Monday in a two-point loss at Loyola Marymount to open their exhibition schedule.

Talia Rayford chipped in with 9 points and a team-high 10 boards, but it was too little too late as the Waves boasted a pair of double-figure rebounds to accompany their quartet of double-figure scorers.

The Toros will begin their official 2014-15 schedule next Friday at the PacWest/CCAA Challenge hosted by Azusa Pacific, facing the host Cougars for a 7 pm tip.
